DarkSteven -> Anecdotal information on the economy. (7/25/2012 3:51:35 AM)

As all of you know, genuine economic statistics are compiled, processed, analyzed, etc. Which makes them very useful but not all that timely.

I am actively looking for work and IMO am pretty well monitoring the economic health of the Denver area. I have noticed a serious increase in economic activity in Denver over the last two to four weeks, that is translating to more positions advertised, more recruiters showing interest, etc. I have confirmed this with one other local jobseeker.

Are there others, in other places in the US, that have seen anything similar?

It makes no sense to me. In an election year, conventional wisdom is that companies will table their plans until they know who will get elected and what the resultant economic policies will be.

Steven,

Companies can go only so long before slow but steady growth demands they need help, and they hire.

Without prying into your private life, DS, there is no way I can give any decent advice to your question(s). But having been unemployed for a length of time, I sense the hidden anger and dispair in your words. Folks that have not been unemployed for a long length of time, or close family/friends will not pick up on the style of your language and words. If I had a solid lead to give you, I would!

I could give you the advice most of the folks here will try, but I believe you have tried all those things before now. Most folks that will reply here will try to give you good advice, because they are well intended in their views. However, unless they have been in your position, its hard for them to relate. Dont blame 'em.

Two alternative ideas that might help you in your area is to check two locations:

A) The local / Regional Chamber of Commerce

B) The Small Buiness Administration (the SBA)

Both locations sometimes have been really helpful to the unemployed by putting them in touch with area companies that can not find the right workers. Not many folks looking for work think on these two resources. Hope this helps you!

Thanks, joether, but there's no anger or despair there. I've been unemployed before, I know how to look for work, and I'm doing all I can. Networking, calling recruiters, using LinkedIn, monitoring job sites, etc.

I actually wasn't asking for jobhunting help - I've given some seminars myself on the topic - but was curious if the Denver improvement was regional or if the rest of the nation is seeing something as well.

The economy lurches, Steven. Watch for broader signs (which btw arent good nationally and internationally), and keep putting in applications

There are a lot of black energy jobs in North Dakota courtesy of those evil rich bastards

I would write "good luck" but I dont believe in luck. Its risk taking, perseverance, and hard work that really pays off

Yeah, unless the opposite happens, and slow but steady declines demand they release help, and they fire.
The concept of perpetual growth in a finite universe is foolish.

its just this part of an economic cycle, imo..

I think its just the economy turning around, slowly.. people's confidence coming back, slowly.. real estate has stablized in the areas I have looked at, prices are up slightly.. less inventory.. some quality built or renovated homes getting full price and multiple bids, selling faster.. For me, I look at what is happening in real estate, it reflects what is going on in the economy in general..

according to this, Denver real estate is hot..

I can assure you that there is no such upswing happening in SE Michigan.

A friend in TX got a good paying job in the oil industry. Some industries are fairing much better than others. I understand Las Vegas is down across the board. Gambling as a measure of economic confidence is down. Locally here (Crystal Coast NC) I've seen a few businesses come and go quite rapidly. For Rent / For Sale signs are everywhere. Starbucks is doing quite well here though.

BreakTrainUse -> RE: Anecdotal information on the economy. (7/25/2012 1:11:52 PM)

There is no uptick in Central Virginia. Housing construction is non-existent, homes for sale are being lowered in price with no buyers, and the job market is flat.

D.C., however, is booming. There was no recession there at all.

I've sold more property so far this year than in all of last year. That's the good news. The bad news is that the market has gone from "Truly shitty" to "Very slow"

Yeah, the oil industry is doing quite well and may well be the driving force behind Denver's comeback. I dunno how oil is doing so well when the pump price hasn't risen.

That just boggles me. People don't have discretionary income to travel (I think of Vegas as being in the travel industry rather than the gambling industry) but do have it for Starbucks?

..little (affordable) pleasures.. it makes sense to me.. a couple of bucks for a fancy coffee or a triple chocolate cookie is much easier to swing than a pot of money to gamble (& lose) with or to travel..

Well hun, since we're in the slow but steady growth, and Steven shares people are hiring, I guess it's the first one, huh.

KYsissy -> RE: Anecdotal information on the economy. (7/25/2012 3:09:12 PM)

My area has not fared as bad as others. We didn't have the boom, so the bust was not as severe.

I recently got a healthy bump in salary. Haven't had a raise or a bonus in 4. Grapevine says everyone got a bump. So evidently management thinks things are starting to look up for us. We have had a few people leave for greener pastures and we will/have filled those positions and added 1 or 2.

I know its still a tough job market out there. We get 50-100 resumes for a position where we used to get 15.

I have seen a few new construction projects started recently, both residential and commercial. Nothing like 5 years ago but I haven't seen hardly anygroundbreaking for the past 3 years. One or two here and there maybe, but I see several going on now.

That's all I got.

Oil is way more than domestic pump prices. And 3 lattes a day might help keep me awake but wouldn't take me very far.[:D]

well, I have not looked at SE Michigan but the areas i have looked at are doing better.. I like only certain select areas that I think will do better over the long haul and those are the ones I follow.. I was surprised that Denver real estate is up 20% over last year.. but Denver isnt someplace I follow..

There are far more businesses hiring in my city then there have been in the past couple of years. New construction, too, both residential and commercial. Unfortunately, most of the jobs available are in the low-paying service industry, however, I have read recently that many of the manufacturing plants are upset because they can't find "qualified" people to fill the positions open from people who have retirement age. Gone are the days when a person gets on-the-job training in manufacturing.

There was a recession in the DC area, though it was much milder than most places. Central Maryland is doing ok - I know a lot of people that have got laid off or had their hours/bennies cut back, but some of them are finding work again and a lot of the houses that got foreclosed on 2 or 3 years ago are getting bought up and lived in again and some new developments are being built.

Interesting because you live in Pennsylvania, in the Rust Belt. That's where OH and PA are, two of the most important swing states.
