I have Comcast and am in the US:

The Opening Ceremonies will be shown Friday, 7/27, from 7:30 p.m. to midnight ET on NBC and NBC HD. The Opening Ceremonies will not be available for live streaming online or on mobile devices, due to an NBC programming decision. However, highlights from the Opening Ceremonies will be available for viewing ON DEMAND, online and on mobile devices beginning Saturday, 7/27.

If you're watching it live online, what URL are you using?

I DON'T have Comcast and I too am in the US!

(Now....all kidding aside...I saw a post the other day from some chic who said she couldn't get Hulu.com because she was in Canada. Being in the U.S., I find it incredible that anyone can't get anything on the net. Is that true? I know that China and other countries somehow filter...but...can't anyone get anything on the net? It's the net after all....isn't it available to anyone that wants to dig in?).

I guess I should ask....are there things that people in the U.S. can't get?

(Sorry...I'm 53....my cell phone pisses me off....).

Why can't you get anything on the net? Anywhere.

Someone please....I'm honestly confused on this....why can't anyone get anything on the net?

Attention NBC - The Clash is not appropriate Olympics music!

Attention England - I vastly preferred China's opening ceremony.

Geo blocking, which you can work around by using a proxy server, but I suspect this will slow times so as to make access moot. Perhaps the videos are downloadable.

Why Canadians Can't Watch TV Shows on Hulu, etc.

Geo-Blocking

This restriction of content within certain geographical boundaries is called “geo-blocking.” And because of it, Canadian viewers trying to access content on most US network sites will see messages like: “We’re sorry, but the video you selected isn’t available from your location.”

The geo-blocked message on the Hulu website stands out in that it offers a little encouragement:

“Hulu is committed to making its content available worldwide. To do so, we must work through a number of legal and business issues, including obtaining international streaming rights. Know that we are working to make this happen and will continue to do so…”

As noted below, the message may sound a tad optimistic.

Blame Canada

One might assume that the US networks are restricting Canadians’ access to their online episodes. In fact it’s most often the Canadian networks that are behind it. Here’s why.

When Canadian viewers watch American shows on US network websites, they’re not watching them on CTV or on Global. The resulting decline in the Canadian networks’ viewership and ad revenues could threaten the networks’ viability. So, as part of the Canadian majors’ licensing agreements with the originating US networks, they agree to air a particular show in Canada, provided that the American network prohibit Canadian viewers from watching the show anywhere but on the Canadian network or its website.

So much for the “borderlessness” of the Internet. It can be a challenge sometimes trying to reconcile one’s support for measures protecting domestic industry with the mounting frustrations of repeatedly denied viewership.

I just commented to my son that no one would ever top Chinas opening ceremony.

He said, well when you are afraid you will get your head blown off if ya screw up, ya do a helluva great job!

I dunno where he gets his attitude from.

That said, I don't get this opening ceremony at all. Perhaps it will become clear as I continue to watch.

Opening Ceremony is a history of England. Agrarian life gave way to the Industrial Revolution, then WW1, and on and on...

What's bugging me is the inane commentary.

Impossible for the coalition to sanction massive spending with all the cut backs, so they didnt expect it to be as spectacular as China. The designer said the ceremony was to reflect British history. The bit with the kids and nurses was to reflect the work of the NHS. The majority of those taking part were volounteers who gave up 150 free hours to rehearse. Not sure if you can all watch the clip, it shows the lighting of the cauldron.

I thought it was fucking awesome and watched it with two of my teenagers at work, who - of course - particularly enjoyed the Mr. Bean part. I will watch it again in 4.5 hours when the repeat will come as I was only able to watch the first part half heartedly due to trouble with some other kids at work and at least, during the repeat...they will be sleeping

regarding the blocking, yep it is Canada or the CRTC, controlling it.
Still pisses me off:)

Having watched the opening ceremony, its VERY anglo -centric, historical references abound.
Not super impressed altho certain bits made me shiver and feel homesick.
Clash was part of the musical show in the UK and here in Canada.
Fond rememberences of seeing them in london a couple of times decades ago:)

A friends daughter and a few of her friends were in the opening ceremonies when we had the Olympics here. They rehearsed for months, and loved every minute of it.

And now I feel guilty and have turned it back on!

It did get better (but still not as good as China.) My friends made similar comments about the recession and societal differences.
