THE NIGHT WATCHMAN
Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert.

Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job. Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies. Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One was to do the studies and one was to write the reports. Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created two positions: A time keeper and a payroll officer then hired two people. Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?" So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cut back." So they laid-off the night watchman.

NOW slowly, let it sink in.

Quietly, we go like sheep to slaughter...Does anybody remember the reason given
for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter
administration?

Anybody?

Anything?

No?

Didn't think so!
Bottom line is, we've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency....the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember!

Ready?

It was very simple... and at the time, everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted on 8/04/1977..................
To LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

Hey, pretty efficient, huh?

AND NOW IT'S 2012 -- 35 YEARS LATER -- AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS "NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. IT HAS 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT
HAS DONE!

(THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?")
34 years ago 30% of our oil consumption was foreign imports.
Today 70% of our oil consumption is foreign imports.
Ah, yes -- good old Federal bureaucracy.
NOW, WE HAVE TURNED OVER THE BANKING SYSTEM, HEALTH CARE,
AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY TO THE SAME GOVERNMENT?

Hello!
Anybody Home?

Signed,
The Night Watchman

Had Reagan not immediately cancelled all of Carter's green energy initiatives, just think where we'd be today.

Remember that, Sparky? Didn't think so!

We are now, since 2011, a net exporter of petroleum, for the first time since 1949.

As someone who worked at Rocky Flats, I can attest to the fact that a MAJOR portion of the funding, if not THE major portion, does not go into fossil fuels or alternative energy, or energy per se at all. It goes to nuclear weaponry. Los Alamos National Labs, The Hanford site, Oak Ridge, etc., have been working nuclear weaponry under the DOE since 1977.

Would that be raw petroleum or various distillates?

In 2011, the United States imported 2.4 MMbd of petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil, jet fuel, and other products while exporting 2.9 MMbd of products, making the United States a net exporter of petroleum products.

FR

So a made up story that portrays the feds as beyond grossly stupid and inept is supposed to change my mind? Please.

What would change my mind is if the piece of fiction above was even sort of close to true.

The DoE was created in response to the oil crisis but as a consolidation of US energy policy making not as a way to lessen oil imports. The NRC and related nuclear weapons facilities were by far the biggest part of the operation then and today.

I was just asking for clarification.

I am sorry that you were fired.

Is the scrap heap still there?

Sanity -> RE: The Night Watchman (7/29/2012 9:56:34 AM)

Yep, the scrap heaps still there, we still cant use our own energy. And what did the ever capable bureaucrats at DOE ever decide about nuclear waste issue, after billions in studies etc.

How is that little project coming along. They took care of that, right?

Yachtie,

I want you to GO TO THIS SITE. Type in the dialogue box the following: Why did Carter create the Department of Energy. Than, start clicking on the entries that you find there. Sooner or later (if not the first entry), will give you an answer like this one...

quote:

In the wake of the energy crisis of the mid-1970s, when the price of oil rapidly increased, concerns that the United States had no energy policy led President Carter to create (1977) the cabinet-level department. SOURCE

Wouldnt it be nice if you could create a thread that talked about something in both a intelligent and reasonably educated manner? This thread is completely laughable. Your arguement(s) sounds like something from the 6th grade (with a mentality and emotional depth to match). Why is the Dept. of Energy in the US Goverment? People voted other people into public office that wish for it to be created and remain active. What does the Dept. of Energy do? Why not go on their website and get educated? Finding that website should prove a challenge as you clearly dont know how to use a search engine to answer your simple question.

I'll take the educated guess that someone told you to hate this department and even supplied you with sound bites. Never once so far, in this thread or previous threads, could I accuse you of having enough of a mind to ask a good, decent, and thought out question. Or reply to such a question with a good, decent, thoughtful answer.
