By the way -- just the coolest thing --

I was out walking this morning and my dog found a fawn hiding just around a tree trunk (we apparently surprised the doe)--just about 18'' long. When we found it, it bellowed (damn, those things have lungs!) and wobbled to its feet--could just barely stand--and bellowed again. Cutest thing--head too large for it's body, legs far too skinny--usual "I'm small now but I'll grow to be big soon" deal.

Of course, it was best that we just get away and leave it be, but it's yet one more reason why no one should hesitate to walk in the rain when everyone else is gone.

Just the other day my dog and I found a baby bird that left the nest to early thinking it could fly. Instead of leaving it for the cats, I managed to catch the feathered fledging. Though tempting to have another pet animal in the house, we loaded up and went the vet for the birdy to be better handled. After all, after raising a sparrow, aren't you suppose to let it go? My lil subby wouldn't like do that at all. In this case, it was better to let go before getting attached.

I hand raised two magpies - after their parents were both killed.  I still have the damn scars on my hands to prove it - and yes they were released - the male left, but Drucilla stayed around and would knock on my kitchen window to come in, and even just walk through the back door.   So there is a chance the sparrow would have done the same but hey - 50/50 chance there... at least I know shes happy and she gave birth to her own brood too (She nested a few doors away) -

Tim... thank You for a fantastic and beautiful post.  It made me smile.
Peace and Rapture

I work nights lately. So I can relax and watch the bunnys, prairie dogs in the afternoon, hawks and the odd coyote on my smoke breaks. A couple grouse have wandered in too. Some of the critters are pretty relaxed around us now.
