I should add that most of the traditional legal conceptions of women as property probably derive from Roman traditions, Celtic traditions were I believe, quite a bit more democratic, but were supplanted formally by Roman law - such things do tend to persist in individuals and smaller groups, so familial attitudes and customs run the gamut.
