DeviantlyD -> WTF??? Another shooting (8/5/2012 3:47:15 PM)

Oh my gosh! Another shooting. This time at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

A witness quoted in the story said "it was a very coordinated thing". I can only imagine it was spurred by some form of hate.

I have a lot of thoughts on this, but they are all jumbled and the only thing I can express is sadness for a community attacked.

The only, only good thing to come out of this is educating the uneducated about what the Sikh religion is and, perhaps more importantly, what it is not.

Edited to correct typo.

On this evening's local ABC news, their over-enunciating Hispanic reporter, Michelle Gee-arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrdo, called it a "sick" temple. For those of you unfamiliar, it is pronounced "seak" and it is NOT a branch of Islam. The religion comes from India. The males typically do not shave their facial hair and they often wear a type of turban.

At this point (6pm Central) there were 7 dead, including the gunman.

You have just enunciated all of my knowlege of the Sikhs. The shooter was sick.

Unreal. I hope their families can find some small amount of peace and strength in the days to come.

My heart goes out to them too...So many loonies out there.

The president of the company I worked at for many years was a Sikh....Nice guy but a stern boss....He stopped wearing his turban and special clothes as he was discriminated against in the business world because of what he wore...

This stuff used to really shock me, almost to the point where I couldn't function. Now it's another week, another random shooting somewhere in the U.S. I think that's the saddest part of all-- getting used to it.

Pam

I agree Pam!
My thoughts are with the families of the victims,
Another tragedy :( heartbreaking.

DeviantlyD -> RE: WTF??? Another shooting (8/5/2012 5:58:33 PM)

I can't ever get used to it.

That...is a very sad way to put how I feel about this. I wonder why all these shootings are springing up all over the place.

I strongly doubt that, people just adjust to things, deal with things differently. I will be the first to admit that tragedies like this or even mass killings, war, genocide are not subjects which effect me greatly. Part of that is that I am fortunate not to be involved with any, the closest being the shooting in Tucson a couple of years ago... still, I do not know the people involved and so there is a sense of distance. Not that I am personally cold or turned off to what is happening in the world since we decided that we were no longer part of the animal kingdom but rather, I feel, as a self-defense mechanism. If I allowed myself to open up to that level of empathy, I would find it difficult to function.

The Tucson situation, I knew everybody who was there that worked at the grocery store where the shooting happened and though I felt for what they went through and in listening, I could feel their pain... there was still a sense of distancing from the situation itself. Perhaps my wiring just got fucked up or perhaps something shriveled up and died in my teens when I went through some personal tragedies... I have no fucking clue.

Rule -> RE: WTF??? Another shooting (8/5/2012 6:46:43 PM)

In this case my sense of paranoia does not stir.

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to indiscriminately shoot Sikhs. I suspect that it is a case of mistaken identity.

I agree with some of what CRYPTICLXVI said. Added to that, I don't know you, so I cannot agree or disagree with your statement. I rather doubt that it boils down to one person being better than another though.

I don't say this to offend, so I apologize if it does, but based on some of your past posting, I get the impression part of your kink is humiliation. Perhaps a little of that is what prompted the above? Either that or something else entirely.

Something to do with making it easy for inadequetes and idiots to get hold of guns?
