I've read She and King Solomon's Mines. I enjoyed
them both. I love Hammer films and I like
the Ursula version of She but I really like
the 1935 version with Helen Gahagen.
She made a hypnotic "She Who Must Be Obeyed"

Four books I would recommend by
Wilkie Collins are:
The Woman in White
The Moonstone
Armadale
No Name
Lydia, the anti heroine of Armadale is
a fascinating character, not a Girl Scout
not a role model but a greatly drawn
female character in a good book.

Now if you want a true switch with dominant leanings... Anita Blake. Kick ass heroine.

Anita Blake does do some serious ass kicking and is drowning in sex later in the series, but in the beginning when the writing is better does not get serious under the sheets.

I preferred Merry Gentry's mystical sex scenes, but she likes getting her hair pulled too much to be considered dominant, although she definitely is a strong woman.

Andrew Vachss "Burke" series... a lot of strong female characters. The topics and writing is quite graphic, not "erotic" in the least, much more sexually gritty. Still they dealt with "family", strength, et al and I found them quite entertaining. Met the author a couple of times, a very intense man.

I love his Burke series and am envious you met him. He's one of the best..........luci

Just met him at two "readings" here in Portland, one at Powell's and one at Barnes and Noble. Spoke with him for awhile after each reading. He was living between Vancouver, Wa and NYC for awhile. I haven't read everything since he ended the Burke series though.

I did get in touch with him indirectly and one of his assistants responded a long time ago when my dog Belle was had cancer... and I was looking for any options. His work with "difficult" dogs has been inspiring to me.

I recall him being asked here in Portland on a radio interview something to the effect that he must love children because of the work he did, there was a silent pause and he just responded very matter-of-fact that no, it was that he just hated predators.

Gone With the Wind was one of my favorite books in high school, but I now find it hard to stomach the racism.

There are actually some interesting reflections on how Scarlett was too man-like for going after things directly and about how she wished she could be more like her genteel mother.

I believe that. That sounds about like what you think he would really feel. Interesting guy, for sure. He's one of a short list I think I'd really enjoy talking with. Now, James Lee Burke would blow me away if I got the opportunity to actually converse with him. He's my absolute favorite........luci
