I'm not tightly connected to the scene in NYC, but I live in NJ and go to the city several times a year. Drop me a note anytime. I'll be glad to answer questions and introduce you to some people.

Is it typical for novice dominants to have a "guide"?

I'm just learning about all of this myself, and I don't think I'd be comfortable having "another" in the bedroom with me, so to speak.   I can see where it's helpful to have a friend to talk to though.

Typical? No.

Useful? Yes.

More useful though is having a small group of experienced tops and dom (even switches and bottoms/sub frankly) whom you can talk to, ask questions, and learn technical skills from.

I learned flogging from one woman and knife play from a man. A bottom taught me about bondage and a submissive about the value of consistancy. A femdom couple I know and a gay master & slave I know are great folks for me to bounce questions off as Fox and I continue in our own Ms relationship -- both of these couples have been in stable Ms arrangments longer than I.

If your form of dominance is strictly for sex, probably not.

For others who choose to exert their dominance for things other than sex, perhaps the answer is yes.

Have you been down to the Eulenspiegel Society? It's a good place to learn the ropes.

You can email me privately if you have any questions I've attended for years. I co-ordinated the submissive men's group for about a year and co-coordinated the dominant women/submissive men's group briefly back in the early 1990s there.
