kalikshama -> Google Issues Warning for State-Sponsored Attacks (8/12/2012 4:53:55 AM)

Have we talked about this already?

We are constantly on the lookout for malicious activity on our systems, in particular attempts by third parties to log into users’ accounts unauthorized. When we have specific intelligence—either directly from users or from our own monitoring efforts—we show clear warning signs and put in place extra roadblocks to thwart these bad actors.

Today, we’re taking that a step further for a subset of our users, who we believe may be the target of state-sponsored attacks. You can see what this new warning looks like here:

[image]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kaEkDHuMR-8/T85THToQyYI/AAAAAAAACQg/O0-Pi2OdUeY/s500/Targeted+User+Warning.png[/image]

If you see this warning it does not necessarily mean that your account has been hijacked. It just means that we believe you may be a target, of phishing or malware for example, and that you should take immediate steps to secure your account. Here are some things you should do immediately: create a unique password that has a good mix of capital and lowercase letters, as well punctuation marks and numbers; enable 2-step verification as additional security; and update your browser, operating system, plugins, and document editors. Attackers often send links to fake sign-in pages to try to steal your password, so be careful about where you sign in to Google and look for https://accounts.google.com/ in your browser bar. These warnings are not being shown because Google’s internal systems have been compromised or because of a particular attack.

You might ask how we know this activity is state-sponsored. We can’t go into the details without giving away information that would be helpful to these bad actors, but our detailed analysis—as well as victim reports—strongly suggest the involvement of states or groups that are state-sponsored.

We believe it is our duty to be proactive in notifying users about attacks or potential attacks so that they can take action to protect their information. And we will continue to update these notifications based on the latest information.

Starting Tuesday, look out for an unusual warning atop your Gmail inbox, Google home page or Chrome browser. It will not mince words: “Warning: We believe state-sponsored attackers may be attempting to compromise your account or computer.”

Google said it planned to issue the warning anytime it picks up malicious–possibly state-sponsored–activity on a user’s account or computer. How does Google know whether an attack is state-sponsored? It won’t say.

“We can’t go into the details without giving away information that would be helpful to these bad actors, but our detailed analysis—as well as victim reports—strongly suggest the involvement of states or groups that are state-sponsored,” Eric Grosse, Google’s vice president of security engineering, wrote in a blog post.

The announcement is timed just one week after security researchers discovered Flame, a massive, data-mining virus, had been spying on computers in the Middle East– predominantly in Iran– for at least the last four years.

Researchers say they believe the Flame virus is sponsored by the same entity that commissioned Stuxnet, a virus co-sponsored by the United States and Israel, that destroyed thousands of Iranian centrifuges in 2010.

Intresting.

Its an open secret that various nation states use this type of tech. Its interesting that google seems to be against it given that they are in much the same game (ie data harvesting, albeight by more legitimate means). Its the first major IT company to openly disagree with US covert policy although many have done it behind closed doors.

Certainly any UK tech company crossing the Crown in such an open manner would be invited round for a cup of tea and stiff talking to here. Of course who knows whats REALLY going on here?

So we strongly suggest you follow your up and coming fascist govt. and their orders...lemmings.

Notice how the genesis of this whole warning is about 'state-sponsored' cyber crime and surveillance 'cyber-tage' but that which they just can't tell us all about because of course as always...that would compromise their contacts and sources.

This is more govt. propaganda to reinforce the idea that 'you' and 'society' are continually being attacked and must remain forever in that state-of-mind and ever vigilant against enemies from all over the world using everything they can to...terrorize you. So be afraid and spend, spend...spend people.

Funny how I hadn't noticed all of this before govt. yes with it's co-conspirators such as corp. America, etc, etc. clearly in bed with her. I am sure there is also the silver lining of great profits at taxpayer expense to enjoy all of the protection we are going to need.

Carnivore
You may have heard about Carnivore, a controversial program developed by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to give the agency access to the online/e-mail activities of suspected criminals. For many, it is eerily reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." Although Carnivore was abandoned by the FBI in favor of commercially available eavesdropping software by January 2005, the program that once promised to renew the FBI's specific influence in the world of computer-communications monitoring is nonetheless intriguing in its structure and application.

What exactly was Carnivore? Where did it come from? How did it work? What was its purpose? In this article, you will learn the answers to these questions

thankfully american NEVER have to worry about the gubafia abusing power.

In light of recent history they are obviously talking about Iran and China rather than the US government. I doubt it'll affect the average person unless they have a job in government or are employed at a high level in a major western company, especially if that company is a defence contractor.

Much opportunity for blackmail leading to industrial espionage for all those that have one life on the internet and another in the real world.

people are continually being attacked.

BY THE GUBAFIA!

they are just trying to shift the focus off of them. magicians have been doing it for years. works as well in politics as it does on stage.

Look at the timeliness of these mass shootings.

just CONINCIDENTALLY the same time ohaha is trying to push through a treaty that would infringe on our gun rights with the UN.

Not to mention the continual attack by a few certain very obvious troughers even on this lil ole board.

in light of reality we just disagree

Pittsburgh Tribune Review 2012-07-22: On â€at least one occasion” the federal government violated the Constitution’s ban on unreasonable searches in using its power to wiretap people in the United States without a warrant, a federal court said. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court’s finding was disclosed without details in a letter on Friday to Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., from a top aide to National Intelligence Director James Clapper. Wyden is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a critic of the law permitting warrantless wiretaps. The letter, also sent to the Senate... more »
