A double record-setting Burmese python has been found in the Florida Everglades.

At 17 feet, 7 inches (5.3 meters) in length, it is the largest snake of its kind found in the state and it was carrying a record 87 eggs. Scientists say the finding highlights how dangerously comfortable the invasive species has become in its new home.

"This thing is monstrous, it's about a foot wide," said Kenneth Krysko, of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida. "It means these snakes are surviving a long time in the wild, there's nothing stopping them and the native wildlife are in trouble."

I've had snakes as pets before...but a 17' 7" python is a bit too much.People shouldn't buy these larger snakes as pets if they aren't able to handle them.A snake this size has few predators,man and an alligator being the only 2 I can think of.

Status: offline 		I'm glad I'm not in FL anymore either. I prefer nanny state Massachusetts, where we have a bottle bill, annual car inspections, gay marriage, and Romney Care.

Status: offline 		since Pythons/boas and many other "exotic species' (not just snakes, but quite a few other animals) have been dumped into Florida's ecosystem, this story doesn't shock me at all.
What shocks me is the *GASPS* and *HORROR!!!* reactions that arise when a story like this is broadcast.

IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO CARE FOR AN EXOTIC WHEN IT GROWS UP, FFS, DO NOT GET IT AS A BABY!!!!


I think that folks who disregard the above statement should be spayed/neuterd, and sent off to a roadside zoo.

Status: offline 		I agree with you Greedy about not owning exotics if you can't care for them.A few years ago,some idiot turned loose a bunch of emus near a local National Wildlife Refuge because the value of the emus dropped so much they were not worth the cost of feeding them.I was a bit surprised to have a group come running by me one morning right before daylight while bow hunting.Made me question if my morning Mountain Dew had been spiked with something.

There have been several stories coming
from Florida and a few other places regarding
pythons. A toddler girl was killed by one
while her parents slept when the snake
escaped it's tank. Not difficult as the
crackhead dad had just thrown some
tarp over it. Another story was a very
large snake had taken up residence
under a womans house and the wildlife
people were called to get it out it was
massive.

There need to be laws against private
people owning and importing exotic
animals. This happened because idiots
have loosened snakes into the wild.
The pythons have found the environment
in the Everglades very agreeable. They are
now messing with the ecosystem. They
are eating up the crocodiles.
They are also moving up from the
Everglades and it's predicted they
could throughout the southeastern
US.
It's idiocy for people to have exotic
animals be they pythons or tigers or
whatever. Remember the guy from
Ohio with the tigers who let them loose
before he committed suicide? People
were killed and the animals were killed.

Status: offline 		Now I'm thinking it's a bit of urban legend, but reminds me of alligators in the NYC sewers. (Even kudzu. Takes over everything.) Some creatures are best left alone.

this story actually made it over here too, and those were my thoughts exactly. Put it in a zoo, don't kill it
