AlphaRedWolf -> Primal (8/16/2012 12:46:38 AM)

I recently heard the term Primal and am curious what it means in a BDSM sense, I'm just curious since my friends have jokingly called me a very Primal Dom, and well I have never heard it in a BDSM sense before.

Edit to explain my Nick, didn't think of it, it's a play on my name.

UllrsIshtar -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 1:15:06 AM)

No idea, maybe you should ask him why he said it instead of asking a bunch of random strangers online to try and read his mind.

I read your profile, and nothing about you comes anywhere close to across as "primal Dom" to me.

Your nick, however, comes across as if you want to be thought of as such yourself, which makes me question the "friend said story", but then again, it's late, I can't sleep and I've had an unusually large amount of absolute shit in my inbox tonight from random idiots, so maybe I'm just not really up for cutting a new dude some slack.

thishereboi -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 3:32:41 AM)

i have never heard that one. Why don't you ask your friends and get back to us.

DarkSteven -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 3:52:49 AM)

I have noticed Primal as an option on Fetlife, as an alternative to the more common roles Dom/sub/switch/Master/slave/pet, etc. I dunno what it means there, either.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 4:07:31 AM)

I chose it for my descriptor on Fetl, I like how it sounds, it resonated, and 'hedonist' was way too obvious. No one I've spoken to there has a clue, either.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 5:35:49 AM)

This is complete guesswork so feel free to ignore everything I say.

If someone was talking about being primal and dominating in the bedroom, I would expect to be in for some good old fashioned rough sex - grabbing, pushing, biting, just generally taking what they wanted and going at it without any sorts of inhibitions. Hot.

I'm guessing it refers to acting on ones most basic instincts rather than any degree of social niceties.

If someone behaved like that out of the bedroom, I would think they were sort of an ass. To me it suggests acting very impulsively and not controlling feelings or emotions at all, so I'd be picturing someone who behaved as they pleased with out regard for others, lost their temper a lot etc.

I'm assuming that it's primal in the sense of 'oldest and most basic' as in 'primal fears', rather than in the sense of 'essential' or 'most important'.

Kana -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 5:38:52 AM)

When I hear primal I think base level emotions, real primitive neanderthal type stuff, Lord of the Flies "Kill the Piggy" and the veneer of civilization torn from the savages face.

Which can be hot as balls-there are scads of chicks who get dripping wet at the concept, their cunts go all Tropical Storm Primal

sunshinemiss -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 5:40:17 AM)

Tropical Storm Primal

Didn't that hit one of the islands?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 5:40:54 AM)

I am not a neanderthal! But yes, I have my moments of... well. I just don't want to go into it on a public forum. I don't let that part of me out much. Which is good, really, since that bit leaves Kana in the dust.

It's not a commonly used phrase in BDSM circles, so by and large you won't have any concensus definition. I've heard it used occasionally, and generally it denotes someone who has a caveman/cowboy type personality. More id that superego. You rarely hear anyone describe themselves as a "primal dom" because generally the people who are smart enough to understand what that means don't like the connotations.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 8:55:27 AM)

To me, being primal is about animalism, the basic "uncivilized" parts of us. Rough hanndling, aggressionn, lots of physicality, gruffness, blah blah blah. It's pretty awesome when it's from someone who is genuine.

Based on my reading of your profile, I agree with Ishtar at this point - however, none of us know you, so maybe there's a part of you that doesn't come through onn the profile.
Best bet - ask your friennd what he meant, not us.

LadyPact -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 10:24:23 AM)

Does your friend watch you play often? When you are playing, are you more the type to scratch, bite, cause pain by overpowering and by use of force, rather than the use of implements? This is often called primal play.

Since there are a number of people out there who don't necessarily distinguish the difference between being a top and a Dom (even though there really is a difference) maybe that's what your friend meant.

wildernessbitch -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 11:28:31 AM)

You know Lady Pact the more i read the more i agree with you.

LadyPact -> RE: Primal (8/16/2012 11:31:08 AM)

LOL. It does tend to happen sometimes. [:)]

This would be my understanding also.

The only way to know though, is to ask for clarification.

What are the connotations ? are they 'primitive?' or are they 'natural ?'

I think of 'Primal Dominance' as someone who is fundamentally dominant rather than someone who has learnt how to be dominant.
