LookieNoNookie -> When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 6:12:26 PM)

Well...I just did (again)...and I have boxes from the last 4 moves that have never been emptied....just hired a chic to come in and put shit away....I'm going to FINALLY have this shit put away, or melted.

I'm going through CD's that she's put in a box (for me to discern) to find files that I was sure had been torched, all kinds of (wonderful) framed shit from ex girlfriends that are just wonderful (hanging now on my wall....most people will come in and think "That Motherfucker's a STUD!!!!"...and I'd like to state now, unilaterally....I am).

(It's true).

I have 2 kabillion cat toys that the cats have never experienced (Cat Valhalla)....laser tag tonight.....I love calculators....I now have 473 of them....clocks....you need one? I also have drugs that I can't recall....ebay is my next stop on that front....(can I do that?).

I just found some pictures of some chics who I have absolutely no recollection of, but they're quite fine....kind of brown they are....faded.....I think I must have been handsome then....fuck...I just looked again....they're friends of my last gf....fuck....I thought for a moment I was hot shit. (I was...but apparently not as much as I once remembered).

Lot of shit that I never needed....shouldn't have ever found intriguing...but I got tons of that crap.

Books...love 'em....read or not....books are wonderful things.

I have 17 wallets.

None of which, however, are in good repair....but I got 'em if you want one.

TV clickers? I got a box full.

Send me your address and a prepaid...and it/their is/are yours.

There ya go.....there it is....

JJ

I moved a little over a year ago. Did some major spring cleaning and Craigslisted a lot of stuff in the months before the move. If you have stuff still boxed up from four moves ago chances are you do not need it and will not miss it. Dump it. I also hired movers last time. Best money I ever spent.

OsideGirl -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 7:22:37 PM)

December 2011. The weekend before Christmas.

We had rented a house in November 2010, the own swore they were planning on keeping the house until they died. Then in September 2011, they came to us and told us they were selling the house. The stars finally aligned for us to buy a house. Now, I don't think I'll move again, unless we hit the lottery.

May 2009, when we decided on a whim it was a good idea to move into together less than 2 months after we met :)

kitkat105 -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 8:07:32 PM)

I moved from a small town in rural Australia (5 hours south of Sydney) to the Bay area California, 6 weeks ago.

The nice part is I brought my suitcase. That is basically it. I didn't have much "stuff" (and have attachment issues in regards to stuff) - basically 4 medium boxes worth that now resides with my parents.

The extra cool part is I now get to start all over again. It really is a fresh start.

LadyPact -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 8:11:16 PM)

I've moved thousands of miles three times since I joined the site.

(You should talk to Mp though. You both seem to have the habit of collecting the stupidest shit.)

Nothing wrong with collecting stupid shit :P

Like the sentimental fool I am I end up loads of seemingly useless bits and pieces, but each elicits bitter sweet memories :)

I got rid of almost everything when I moved to AZ, more of it when I moved to Central Cali and little left returning to Portland. Cost me a shitload of money and an additional 3 years with someone who didn't want to be together it turned out... but I did a major purging of the external.

Now, I am starting over, some clothes, some books and some borrowed furniture in a room. Life is fucking great! Well, except for the fact I would like a cigarette... Almost a week, droogs.

littlewonder -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 8:33:08 PM)

I moved here to Baltimore, MD from Allentown, PA, where I have lived for the past 15 years, last July. I sold my home, gave away or threw out 75% of everything I owned, packed up about 20 boxes worth of stuff and no furniture. I basically left an entire lifetime behind and I've never been happier. I kid you not, when my daughter was young, she collected string. Yes, string. Of all that one could collect. [8|]

Shininglight23 -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 8:46:42 PM)

May 2012... I moved 2,880 miles from home. Pa -> Ca

I came with a suitcase and shipped one box of photos/memorabilia. I gave away/purged most of my belongings. It was tough, but stuff is just stuff. Material things don't make you happy (not in my case) but the people you surround yourself with can.

I second LW's sentiment... I've never been happier.

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 9:47:51 PM)

Oh boy, I wish I could remember exactly, lol. We were flooded out twice in 11 months, I stayed in a FEMA trailer for a year, year and a half, or two years, then I moved to my house. I packed EVERYTHING, even the dead roaches from my old apartment, and old letters from friends and family. Toward the end I had just bought tubs and shoveled anything I could get my hands on into them, lol. The last move was something like ten or twelve years ago.

My apartments had been huge. I had a game room with scores of puzzles and scores of board games, etc., a sewing room full of fabric and threads and cutting tables and patterns and several sewing machines and probably a dozen scissors...

And my books!!! Thousands. Movies? Thousands. Dead roaches? Eh, not so many but those sneaky buggers get everywhere, including inside tvs and microwaves (none live with me now; I'm in a house, not an apartment building. Killin them was easy, mwahahaha). While moving, we found a mummified dead bird that had flown in my window and my cats had stashed it behind my huge deep freezer (I did NOT keep that as a souvenir, no matter how much the kitties begged.)

My house groans with stuff, and recently, with the addition of something like six floor to ceiling book cases, I've been unpacking boxes and tubs I haven't dug into since two moves ago. I loves my sewing stuff *sighs*. Anyway, my eyes are crossing over what has been kept tucked away in my basement in storage all these years, and yanno...the several dust bunnies I picked up and tossed into the trash made me pick them up with two shaking fingers...they now reside at the town dump. Oh, I have found kitty whiskers! (Yep, I save those. They're good luck, lol.)

The Salvation Army smiles when they see me dumping more stuff off, the neighbor has my collection of Star Wars books and Quantum Leap and several others (I kept my Star Treks though)...and I have two boxes of books I am taking to a consignment book store for credit. Oh, and about my half dozen large tubs full of yarn...um...I am so not parting with those BUT I have begun knitting hats again to donate to my oncologist's office.

I love my stuff and hope to never have to move again in this lifetime. (As a kid, I had to move almost every year of my life and usually "lost" everything. With one move, I had only the clothes I stood in and everything else was left behind. I love having my STUFF!)

MistressDarkArt -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/16/2012 10:08:47 PM)

1997 when I bought this house. 2 years ago I did a ruthless give-donate-throw-away from top to bottom, including the garage. Since then the rule is thing in/thing out. No exceptions. I've done some swap-outs of the musical instruments (sold extra guitar/bought new 5-string fiddle, etc) but pretty much all else is under control. And I made SURE the first few things I disposed of were the BIG things, like my mom's huge work desk that never fit in my small house, the hot tub, and recently the motorcycle.

Ahhhhh! I can see the walls and floors again!

MariaB -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/17/2012 2:40:39 AM)

We are always moving. We move where the work is and when we have earned enough we move where the good cycling, sailing and climbing is!
Our main home is a boat which sometimes comes with us on the move, meaning I don't need to sort out whats coming with me but if the boat isn't part of our journey then we travel very light.
I have a few material things that are precious to me. Little things made for me by my children when they were small, photographs and a little wooden horse that was gifted to me from my grandpa but I have never understood the fascination with ornaments and such. I don't collect, I never hoard or save something because I think one day it may be useful.

inorite?! (Am I using that correctly? :P)

I've moved a few times before, really bad at actually packing anything of value. Tend to move with two or three bags of sentimental things and not much else lol

GreedyTop -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/17/2012 4:33:16 AM)

The last time I moved, I had to supervise friends that were helping me. They kept wanting to toss stuff they thought was useless. it got to the point that I ended up just saying "memory trigger" and they shut up and packed it..LOL

oh, and the last time I moved was the last weekend of May, 2011.

Delilya -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/17/2012 5:26:28 AM)

I was living in California last year. In August 2011 I threw what I could into a duffle bag, hopped a bus, and came home to Georgia.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/17/2012 6:00:09 AM)

The last time we moved was 8 years ago. I do not *like* to move and Himself loathes it. I'm sure this has everything to do with the fact we are both collectors. He collects everything from coins to historical miniatures (he has thousands).

Most of my things revolve around crafts or cooking. We both collect books. Our living room is basically the library. So yeah, moving is a nightmare.

Fortunately, I am the type who likes things organized and demands clean closets, so I do have a routine of going through and getting rid of my things and mutually held things that we don't need to hang on to. His stuff, I don't get to touch (literally).

Fortunately we have a 3 bedroom house; one of the spares is his work room where he paints miniatures, the other is a laundry room/storage room for miniatures.

Early on I realized I had to take a hard line on stuff we both like to collect, like boxes. "This is a nice box, I think I'll keep it in case I have to send something to X" just does not work around here. I once tossed 30 such nice boxes as part of my discarding routine.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: When was the last time you moved? (8/17/2012 6:21:55 AM)

We moved to this place in October 1985. Place is HUGE. Lots of stuff. Too many things.
