I have reasons to be grateful for Facebook. When I lost my job in 2009, it helped me spread the word to many folks who'd never have known otherwise. They responded with much-appreciated support--including the lead to my current job. The site has also helped me connect with old friends and colleagues, and it led me to a cool part-time gig as a guide at a historic house in DC. And, as I shared in another thread, Facebook was invaluable when a friend died, and I had no way to identify, much less contact, her family and friends.

And yet . . .

I increasingly find that my visits these days bring as much frustration as delight. Crap that I've no interest in--"Trending Articles"; friends' acceptance of "offers" from third parties; and updates from games--keep appearing in my feed. I unsubscribe from one crop, and a new batch shows up. And even when I've ventured into a friend's profile to specify exactly what kinds of updates I want--a multi-click process--I still get every photo that anyone shares from a stranger's page.

Anyone else feel that Facebook is heading downhill?

Headed downhill? Was there an uphill? I like being able to keep in touch and see everyone's grandkids, but the myriad changes for no apparent reason? Not amusing.

I do think the interface was better when I started: more straightforward and way less crap-filled. And I really miss how one used to be able to specify just wanting to see status updates. That cleared out a lot of dreck.

I've given up with trying to block out gaming stuff. There's always more. And why are some things not showing up in my feed anymore? The agenda of FB is increasingly opaque, and I ignore more and more.

Yes. I like Facebook and I usually try not to bitch with every change they make, but I don't particularly like the way they've decided to manipulate my friends list, and now I have to search for certain posts instead of just seeing things in chronological order.

I wish it was a little...simpler. Easier to look at. There's just too much stuff on the page, now.

I really really really dislike this timeline thing. And the trending articles bug me too. If I want to read the news, I will go to a news service site.

I do like the ticker on the side, for those times when I'm on the computer rather than the phone. It's not a horrible site, it does most of what it sets out to do, but it is NOT elegant. The signal to noise ratio increases weekly. As long as I can see pictures of guinea pigs and capybaras and talk to my friends, I'll manage.

Originally my children talked me into FB so I could keep up with pictures of the grandimps and what was going on in their lives. It's great for that. What bothers me most is the fact that if I comment on someones post, then FB feels it's necessary to share that with everyone. I haven't found a way around this and it makes me uncomfortable.

kitkat105 -> RE: Facebook's Decline (8/16/2012 10:32:55 PM)

For the most part I enjoy Facebook. I got my notification yesterday that I will be joining the "Timeline" as of August 22nd. I'm not a huge fan of the format but the fact that I can chat to my parents almost daily via that, I like, and wouldn't stop using it in the foreseeable future.

You can choose "Sort: Most recent" and you'll get posts in chronological order.

I love Facebook. I don't get game updates anymore because I've hidden them. I don't have concerns about others seeing what I post, share or like. And I like seeing what my friends share - we all have pretty much the same interests anyway, so they've exposed me to some cool stuff.
