SilverMark -> Is ther no center? (8/17/2012 6:50:52 AM)

I was reading The New Yorker, and thought this article was great,

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/comment/2012/08/the-last-of-the-moderates.html

Is there no center to American Politics anymore?

Can we not elect moderates of either party?

Will it change?

How long can our country last if our recent history, is our future as well?

As long as neither "party" allows moderates to get beyond the level of county commission, we won't have moderates running.

Our state rep was kicked out of the Republican party several years ago because he didnt vote as he was told by "The Party".

Several years ago, the state Democratic party went to court to get primary election results in the western part of the state overturned because the person who won wasn't liberal enough.
And they fucking WON!!!

I agree with the article that our political radical divide is just temporary…Already we are hearing the displeasure of the American public over deadlock in Congress.

In the near future some savvy politician will wake up to this growing dissatisfaction and run on a platform of compromise for the betterment of America and sweep into office with a landslide. Then the band wagon will be open for new riders and the religious right and the Tea Party will loose their influence and fade into history…UNTIL…The next political analyst campaign manager finds the hot button that will divide voters again. This will continue I believe into the future just as it has in the past.

Butch, I have always thought the same thing, but as of late, I have truly begun to wonder.

I think we'll be wondering for awhile, Mark. Was it a Popeye cartoon that had a crew of donkeys and a crew of elephants, with one side yelling "We accept it!" and the other responding "We reject it"? Popeye or Bugs. Life in these United States.[8|]

It can't come soon enough. I have just come off a period of more than 6 months serving as Technology Director for my State's only Independent Candidate for US Senate. It was nearly impossible to get even name recognition out of the press, even though we had decent we traffic, good PR People, and a VERY warm reception from the public at the very same public events. In fact, at one very well attended event at the state house, both well known candidates got luke warm applause. And our guy got a solid 43 seconds of loud applause and cheers. Fox, CBS, and NBC all reported, had been given a very clear press kit. The reported our guy in variations of the theme as "Other / Independent Candidate".
There'll be no change as far as I can see till stuff like this changes. Another example is the 2nd Democratic candidate in Mass. Marisa DeFranco got ONE TV appearance until the 11th hour came, and then to spice things up a few days before the state democratic convention, they spread stories that she might "shake things up" by forcing a democratic primary in the fall. Course, try getting new delegates three days before a convention.
Marisa, whom I've met several times would have been a very moderate progressive.
