OK, I'll make a serious point. I was at the doctor's the other day and, as usual, had to wait over twenty minutes for my appointment. In the meantime, I picked up some godawful women's magazine. No idea what it was called, and don't care. Suffice to say that it was heavily glossy and probably cost a frigging fortune to the meatheads who actually wanted to pay to read it. I have been seeing the same phenomenon for more than two decades. Articles about women's weight, next to . . . pictures of very, very thin - and stupidly young - women. To me, god knows why, but I always imagine them having unpleasant bowel complaints. They also look as though you could never bonk any of them because one of their limbs might accidentally snap. Why do women buy this shit? There's no way on this God's earth that men would do the same. No man is going to keep paying to be reminded, over and over again, that he's so very much the 'wrong shape'. I don't get this. Are women bloody masochists in this respect? I notice that, at the end of each of these mags, is a section devoted to adverts. These are stuffed full of those placed by plastic surgeons. Perfect placing: make the reader feel like crap, then offer the solution, at a nice big 'n' chunky price, natch. All the people do - the fashionistas, the models, the journalists and the photographers - all they ever do is steal inherent glamour from women, and make it something that they get to define, and that you have to pay for. They are vampires. They rip off happiness, and demand huge wedges of money just so that you can get a tiny, tiny bit of what's rightfully yours, back again.
