Australian photographer Lincoln Harrison captures long exposures of gorgeous star trails in the night sky above the Australian outback. He describes the grueling (and freezing) process of capturing the photos in the Daily Mail.

The "outback" can actually be very cold at night time.

He said: ‘It was a gruelling night with a total shooting time was 15 hours in freezing conditions, sunset to sunrise.’
He had to spend entire nights outside, braving freezing temperatures in the depths of the Australian winter near Bendigo over the scenic Lake Eppalock.

Captured using a long exposure lens, the trails are created as the Earth rotates, giving the impression of the stars moving across the sky.

The northern hemisphere misses out a bit
star-wise, I remember when I was a tot looking
at the milkyway and thinking if thats our
galaxy, why isn't it round...
Then the epiphany of perspective hitting my
little brain like a bomb when I realized why
it isn't round.

Discovery is such an amazing thing especially
for kids.

Well, Bendigo isn't quite the outback, but it is definitely cold there. [:)]

And yes, go to any rural place far enough away from city lights and you'll see every star you could ever imagine.

I think the reson for the star color is that australia is near the south pole.. which have a very clear sky
my brother did the same thing in KSA last year..

Ash!!! Nice to see you still have your head attached to your body.

That is a beautiful photo. My Mom use to do time lapse photography. Camp fires were pretty cool.

I love the colors and the star movement.
