It's called photorealism and, as might be imagined, is one of the most difficult techniques to master. At the art center where I volunteer we have a woman who does photorealism. As good as the guy in your link is (and he is very good) I dare say that our lady is even better. People refuse to believe it is a painting (one guy threatened to sue us for fraud). Still, as much as I admire the talent necessary to paint photo realistically and the "WOW!" factor of looking at a photo realistic work... I've never cared for it as a technique. I mean, it looks like a photograph. I just think that paintings should have that (at least) slightly unrealistic element that allows for greater interpretation by both the artists and the viewer. But that's just me.

Thanks Otter!! great work there!! (all my warmest wishes to you and your lovely Lady!!)

He is very good but, with a couple of exceptions, I wouldn't call him photo realistic. Close, though.

LaTigresse -> RE: WOW!!! (8/23/2012 11:49:43 AM)

I actually do not like a painting or drawing to look like a photo........the Whitaker guy I do like. He manages to capture the essence of the person without it looking like a photograph.....to ME.

My sister is an amazing artist and does things with a simple black carbon pencil and paper that just blows my mind. More than once I've had to ask if one of her drawings is a photography or a drawing. I've tried to get her to do it to sell but she wants to keep it her own little thing. She does photorealism to the max. And I am one of the pickiest art bitches I know.

Whilst I agree with the part I have quoted, I have always believed that photorealism is more about an artist demonstrating their skills and choosing a subject they can demonstrate those abilities on. Whilst they are highly skilled, in fact their skills are incredible because they have such a keen eye for the tiniest of detail, they often have a tendency to lack imagination.

ARIES83 -> RE: WOW!!! (8/23/2012 2:58:05 PM)

Very good, and the girl is cute.

Delilya -> RE: WOW!!! (8/23/2012 3:28:57 PM)

That is amazing.

MercTech -> RE: WOW!!! (8/23/2012 4:21:04 PM)

This has me thinking; the only place I ever see realism in painting and other art these days is scifi and fantasy artwork.

Aswad -> RE: WOW!!! (8/23/2012 4:38:36 PM)

Neither painting struck me as photorealistic. I got that creepy "this is wrong" feeling right away. Uncanny valley, a.k.a. so close you can tell right away. Kudos to the artist in any case. Such pieces take some serious amount of practice and a lot of work to do.

I agree that realism is rarely the best approach for painting, though.

Lucylastic -> RE: WOW!!! (8/24/2012 3:57:56 AM)

I just loved it, then went to his deviantart page and fell in love with his tiger.
I cant spend too much time at deviant art tho, I get all squoooshy n goooey.
I like what I like, Id rather see either of his pics than a picasso or a blue and red striped painting ...but im a heathen not a critic :)
(dont stone me)

I'm pretty sure I disagree with that assessment. I think the results look impressive to the uninitiated. For those who are not immersed in the art world it's easy to look at a lot of modern art and think, "WTF?". Photorealistic pieces are approachable by us unwashed masses... we know how to critique and evaluate them. But in the end, what you're talking about is attention to detail. For me personally I've come to have a lot of respect for the background in a still life -- the part nobody even looks at.

GreedyTop -> RE: WOW!!! (8/24/2012 10:23:02 AM)

Rembrant. LOVE his stuff. The background matters LOADS, to me. The lighting, the colours, etc.

and I *DO* consider myself as a neophyte (unwashed mass-member) for serious art critique.

Picasso leaves me cold.

Pollack?? WTELF????

I want art I can relate to - stuff I can picture myself as being a part of, as the subject.

Dali qualifies, because I have dreams that fall well into his art (realism combined with WTF?).

Art appreciation is SO uncompromisingly subjective....

DeathProof -> RE: WOW!!! (8/24/2012 5:51:23 PM)

It's technically good, but it's a boring painting, as many photorealistic paintings tend to be. I find they don't really have much to say, may as well have just taken a photo.

Aswad -> RE: WOW!!! (8/24/2012 6:02:45 PM)

Speaking of deviantart... anyone here had a look at Shiniez on DA?

That's hilarious in a good way.

Yanno, I might agree with this if someone put the photo and "painting" side by side.

Personally, I appreciate the skill it takes to replicate a photo (especially using ball point pens, as the person in my OP did).

Lucylastic -> RE: WOW!!! (8/25/2012 8:26:22 AM)

I love this one by her hubby, so much that Ive used it as an avatar for years on and off
