Status: offline 		Did that mark the end of American prestige and influence in the world? The end of the American Century before the end of the century? What happened? Is China ascendent?

Status: offline 		Okay, let me sketch this out a bit.

In 1960 America was the monolithic industrial, military, and financial power in the world. We were so full of ourselves and audacious that we responded to the Russian success in space with a national science curriculum in the schools and the vow to place a man on the moon and bring him back home alive.

While Armstrong stepped onto the moon we were already mired in the disaster of Vietnam. We lost 50,000 men by 1975 and were out of there pretty much defeated, and with a severe economic recession.

Since then we have been involved in one useless, petty little war after another: Graneda, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Columbia, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and others I can't remember.

Our inner cities have gone to hell. Our infrastructure is in dire need of repair, and we have a huge national debt.

Our popularity in the world has never been lower; we are viewed as an aggressor nation by many.

In addition the homeland was attacked twice, our embassies were attacked in east Africa, and Iran ran us off.

The 60's were a turbulant decade of riots and assassinations.

Momentarily, we rose to the crest of the hill by proxie of NASA's success with the Apollo program.

Seems to me it has been all down hill since. What do you think? Is our pre-eminence in the world ended or can we get ourselves strong again? What will it take?

Status: offline 		I believe that wasting money on space exploration when we have so much to do, here is a sin.

Our entire history, as a people has been one of explorer/conquerers. We have always been told that the answers to all our ills would be found over that next hill. In some cases, the answers were found but, I have not seen enough to convince me that space holds anything for us but death and disappointment.

On the contrary, it went very well in Vietnam: new weapons and strategies were tested in that arena, very profitable drug trafficking lines were established, and things were shaken up over there.

Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan - Shaking up hard core Muslim countries.

What was the other attack on the USA? (I expect that the first one was 9/11?

Velcro?

He was out at the Air Force base here, on the X-15, before moving on to the moon program.  Lots of local old timers will claim to have known him.  That number will get even higher now, I'm sure. 

If I hear any good stories that seem credible, I may pass them along.

There were two attacks on the Towers. The first occurred in 1993. Explosives in a van.
And yes, the Jimmy Carter fiasco. But the seeds of that were laid earlier.
You think 9/11 was the work of black ops?

I think psycologically for the nation and the world this event marked the pinnacle of American prestige and influence. I wonder if we are an Empire in descent. I use the word Empire in the sense of world influence instead of land acquisition, although we seem to have troops almost everywhere. I think it was Kevin Phillips who wrote that the history of declining empires shows the decline was accompanied by a massive debt increase.

Every Empire has ultimately ended through the impossibility of defending its ever increasing borders against the rest of the world. That can only go on so long.

Hell, if we'd paid attention to the French, we'd have avoided that disaster in Vietnam.

France was an Empire. The UK was an Empire. China was an Empire covering half the globe. Rome was an Empire. Carthage was an Empire. Egypt was an Empire. Macedonia was an Empire. Germany was a medieval Empire. Tiny Holland was an Empire. Persia was an Empire. Mali was an Empire. And that's just off the top of my head.

But we're different. Because....we don't need no stinking knowledge! We're a country proud of ignorance, mocking intelligence as "elitist."

So here we are. For now.

We will just have to learn how to cede the world stage ungracefully. And unnecessarily, in my view--but not the way we're going.
