I post my own Pics in my profile as well as my location including city. I do the same with the Pagan sites I'm a member of as well as the SCA site I a memer of every one who knows Neets and know our lifestyle and religion. Stakkers are not a huge worry we have damned good security 24/7 and I will not be cowered by the possibility that some one my try to out me. People can't handle my lifestyle ot beliefs or even my passtimes they can winge, bitch and whine all the way to the dunny up to when I flush them.... I may get in deep shit for blocking the sewage system but you cant have everything.

I have always used my own photos, if someone wants to pretend to be me, more power to them. I don't mind giving my first name of LeeAnn, and I give the city as the one I work in. I live in the country. I don't worry about stalkers, I am quite capable of dealing with them. Anyone in my life (family, friends, co-workers) that do not know all the details of my life, its just because there has not been a reason to tell them. I am not trying to hide anything. I am cautious about giving my last name or phone number just because I don't want the hassle of freaks bothering me or more importantly, my family.

timeoutgurlie -> RE: Personal Information and Pictures - Do You or Don't You (and Why or Why Not?) (6/12/2006 10:13:17 PM)

I'm a professional, so for reasons that relate solely to business interests, I choose not to post any detailed info about myself.  Sorry if it shatters the dream for anyone who reads my profile later, or has so far, but my name is not actually ChaCha [8|]  I've listed my general area, and felt safe in this because it really doesn't reveal anything unless I give further details in 'private'.

That said, although I've enjoyed a number of people from the site through mails, there was never a time I indulged requests for more info because ti simply wasn't needed.  Had I not met the one I'm with outside of the site, and had ended up romantically interested in someone here, I suppose I'd have eventually disclosed more about myself, but since it was never an issue, it's hard to say whether I would've gone through with it or not.  I'm a member of another site, and have given my full name, address and phone number to a few people after being in touch with them for a long period of time, shared pictures and so on, and felt the friendship was sincere.  No bad situations to speak of as yet, and don't forecast any.

As for pictures on a public website, I'm personally not for it, there's too much at risk.  That would go for any website, but especially one of this nature.  Again, personal preference, I have nothing against anyone who feels comfortable with doing this.  In a perfect world, I'd join in, but as it stands, I have to just say no.

Sorry to double post, but I did want to add a word of caution to something that seems, in hindsight of course, to be like, "Duh, obviously!" -- When you post on a site you feel comfortable in, where you generally "know everyone" and "trust everyone"...don't forget that there are "outsiders" on every site also.  These are people who are both new to the site, and those who are 'just looking' and not even members.

It may be an age thing, having been more naive, or just that it was my first real internet experience, but I did post pictures of myself on the other site I belong to, and it wasn't until I received a 'scary' message that I chose to never do that again.  I received a private message from a man who had perused the member photos and told me some pretty repulsive thoughts he'd had and that he was in my area and had pieced together things from my posts that made himt hink I lived very close (which I did, he was right, that was the frightening part).  After that, I went and edited a lot of posts I'd made, took down pictures I'd put up, and took on a realistic outlook.  You're not just putting yourself out there to people you have faith in, you're putting yourself out there for everyone with access to a PC and an internet connection...potentially scary stuff.

I do use my pic..and my real first name.  I know that with it does come some degree of danger and chance..but if you know me well.. I have been thru the fire anyway..and not much scares me any more.. let alone a cowardly stalker.  I used to care.. used to hide my face.. but after I did it so long from being in small towns just about the fact I am bisexual.. I was like "screw it" ......

I am so over caring what others think..

SeveredNeuron -> RE: Personal Information and Pictures - Do You or Don't You (and Why or Why Not?) (6/14/2006 5:04:55 AM)

I definitely agree with everyone who has said to be careful (its obviously the right things to do).
Someone once tried to blackmail me with content they had of me (gained online), and although it was stalking, it was very scary and i went through alot of psychological trauma over it. Caused me to be suicidal for a period of time and all sorts of nasty stuff.
It still haunts me now, and i dont really know why i still have photos up etc. I guess i have always had something up, its nice to see people. Although i am not as much online now as i used to be, so i am in contact with alot less people..
That and good luck finding me! I dont usually know where i am going to be from day to day (unless ofcourse its at uni :P)
Either way, please be careful, especially all the people out there new to the online world.
Dont make my mistake
*mwah!*

From online, Ive met about 15 people in real life, (2 of them from CM). Ive revealed pictures, full name, location, phone number etc.  But only after I know a person well and plan to meet them.  Otherwise,  Im kind of quiet about that type of thing.  Although Im not real worried about stalking and things of that nature.

Bearlee -> RE: Personal Information and Pictures - Do You or Don't You (and Why or Why Not?) (6/14/2006 5:48:23 AM)

I put up recent pictures of myself and often use my real name here, too.  I am single, run my own store, don’t have kids at home…my folks are gone.  <shrugs>  I guess it’s easier for me to be more open with some things.

I did have someone I was chatting with, who, it turns out has a ranch down this way and I ended up giving perhaps more info out than I should have.  He was so proud when he walked in my store and recognized me.  I was a bit freaked, to say the least!  Turned out his idea of ‘single’ was ‘I’m planning on leaving my wife……….someday’ and I was trying to extricate myself; he wanted to push it; using the ‘stalker’ word pretty much ended things, finally.

Again, it’s no big deal to me to be ‘found out’…I’m responsible for myself and wouldn’t do anything for which I’d be ashamed or compromised.  .  I can understand how difficult it would be for someone sharing custody with an angry ex, or who has a job in the limelight…  I figure it’s an individual decision.

LOL... even the choice to put up rather 'graphic' images of themselves.  Okay...that one I don't understand!  It's kinda nice here on Cm that we don't have to wade through so many of those.

Fast Reply...........
The way I see it is if someone ~finds~ me somewhere they deem questionable and wants to make a stink about it, my first question is what were they doing there to begin with?
