She sat upon a stool, not far from the ones her and her dead lover used to frequent. This was her first time back since he jumped. She almost recoiled at how festively lit the wall behind the bottles were, as if they were all winners at the carnival. "Step right up, Grey Goose, you won yourself a stuffed olive doll. Congratulations!". Kenny would have laughed at that, but only after he had a few in him. Breaking legs didn't offer much in the way of water-cooler humor, so it took him a bit longer than most to transition from work to less-than-being-at-work; when you worked for the man, you never got a day off, and your pager better be a foot closer to your cock than anything else so you can feel it when it goes off.

They got their usual room at the motel most nights, back then at least. These days, she just gets drunk, and then wanders around looking for a taxi, and passes out on the couch. She never believed for a second he jumped - he was afraid of heights. He was afraid of a lot of things, but he never told anyone but Christina. She knew he hated spiders, and that he like to wear purple eyeshadow while she read him dirty articles from the magazines you can buy at the 7-11.

They were more than lovers; she taught him how to open a bank account for something other than evil, how to make a good sandwich, and how to love someone other than himself and drugs. His ex knew about her, but still came by their place every pay-day to ask for money. He always gave it to her, and there were no complaints. It just wasn't worth it. What was worth it, was when Christina told her that Kenny was gone, so there would be no more money. 'What do you mean, he's gone?'. Her tone didn't change when she said he was dead, but she did immediately pick up her phone to kill a drug buy before it got taken care of and she would have to owe regardless.

The apartment seemed so empty now. No more drama, no more dents to be put into the walls, and most certainly, no more kinky sex. She moved in the with the next guy she met, and he turned out to have not only a semi-homo-erotic crush on a member of Small Faces, but also had the weird habit of never spelling her name the same way twice. It made Christmas a bit awkward.

They lived in a small cottage next to a lake they had sex at on Saturdays. Life was good, but boring. He was a Christian, and therefore, God was with them. Always with them. Jesus, too. She liked threesomes, but this was a bit much. As things progressed, they had sex less and less, and she began to miss the days of being with Kenny, and even before him when she worked at the phone sex company.

One day, she had the strangest feeling in her gut - she knew for a fact that Douglas, God, nor Jesus, were coming home from work that day. Apparently, Douglas talked them all into going to the casino to spend all of their money. She packed up, moved back to the city, and got her job back with Steve, the guy who ran the phone lines. She met a few of the clients on the side, but only the ones with cute voices who lived in the Metro area.

It took her almost a year to visit Kenny's grave. A small, fake and dusty purple flower was in the vase next to his name marker. His parents has disowned him long ago, and his veteran's grave was merely an earth-level slab with his name and rank engraved on it. She didn't cry until she had to ask the secretary which grave was his, and then she didn't stop until she saw the fake flower.

She drove back to the city, thought about Kenny less and less, and by the time she was an A-List Phone Girl, she forgot all about the men in her past, and focused on staying as high as possible, and for as long as she could. Working from home is great, she thought, as she passed out to the sound of her regular 8am caller cumming furiously. His usual post-coital hang-up woke her, and she went downstairs to drop some Valerian root on her tongue and filled up her bong with salted water.

As she grabbed her roommate for the two-girl ten-am call, she hit the long blue pipe, passed it to her barely conscious roommate and co-worker, and relished in how her life was finally back to normal.

Thank you. It was a very sad time.
I wish I could believe he jumped,
but I just know he didn't.
I just know.
