Master and I would have never met if it hadnt been for online. I doubt I would have ever re-entered a Master/slave relationship without online either. Online has its advantages, it's not all bad.

Some people think that, but then for many others, online is a viable way to meet a person to have a face to face relationship with.  I know for me it was and frankly it is the only way I could meet the people that I am currently in relationships with.  Guess online isn't so pointless and meaningless after all.

It may be meaningless for you, but there are many people that like it. To each their own.

Well you can think whatever you want. However, I am much like slavejali and wouldn't have met and fallen in love with my Dom if it hadn't been for the internet. I got so carried away in fact that I got out of a bad marriage and moved to a new state and have been in bliss for over 3 months. Crazy huh?

Steven,

I am not sure I understand your point of this thread.  Either online is a "pointless and meaningless way of meeting someone" as your first post indicated or as your second post said, "online advantages [are] good you get to learn about one another".

Is meeting someone online good or bad?

Oh, you know me - I love irony.
And there is something ironic about a person writing on a online forum, how cyber is meaningless and that people should meet others in realtime - yet use all the online C/capping for all of U/us to F/follow...

On line has its place to feel somebody out, learn their behavior, and decide whether they are on the same path or not.  It does not compare to real meet, but takes some edge off when/if  that happens.

Considering the fact that you don't have a profile and use the W/we as well as your grammar in the wrong contexts--your point is lost on Me---if cyber is not for you, then why are you here?

I think few would argue that real life would be the better and preferred way to meet someone, but life is not perfect. Not all of us live in places that have an active and healthy BDSM community or have not found what we are looking/need from it.

Online has it hassles, but every approach has them. The goal and approach is the same. Be patient, keep positive and take things in stride.

I spent 2 years in IRC chatrooms before I had a R/T experience. It was great experience.
I even had a collared sub for awhile. In my experience I've met more honest people than not
from online. A lot of IRC chatrooms have home pages that helps weed out the ner do wells.
The moderators are quick to boot any undesireables or anyone who gets out of hand in channel.

One does need to be careful but paranoia is not needed. Ther are ways to meet online people
that tremendously reduce the risk.

1. NEVER meet someone for the first time in private. ALWAYS meet in a public place
and keep it short. 30 min tops.

2. Arrange a safe call. Tell a friend where you will be and with whom. If you don't call by
a certain time the friend is to call the police.

3. Trust your instincts. I f the situation doesn't feel right it isn't. Bail out quick

Now keep this in mind. For every bad story you here about meeting online there are
thousands of success stories. Success stories aren't news and you don't here about them.

It sounds like you are confusing meeting online with having an online relationship. I met my slave/wife here on collarme, but we now have a r/l relationship.
And what's the deal with the W/Well, y/you and w/who in your post? What is the point of that?

actually, the internet is a great place to meet people. i have been in two long-term, long-distance relationships (one involving a year-long engagement to a dominant), with people i originally met online. i just went to visit three awesome girls i know from a message board i've been on for about 4 or 5 years a few weeks ago, and i'm having a girl from the same message board stay with me for six days right now. :) so i balk at the suggestion that the internet is a bad place to meet people. and there are ways to verify peoples' identities, at least to a point.

granted, relationships that are completely online will always be lacking in some dimensions...i could never go back to a long-distance relationship after now being in a close-distance one (just as i could never go back to a vanilla or only bedroom bdsm relationship, after being in a 24/7) but online relationships work in some ways for a lot of people.

This is a good example of something I’ve noticed. Those who complain about people who meet others on the internet are generally poor writers and from that we can safely infer poor readers. Invariably those who complain can’t get their thoughts focused in words. Also, those who write well will point out their success using the internet. This thread from the OP on down is classic.

There are many reasons why internet communication for extended periods before RT meeting is valuable. It is an e-harmony type compatibility feeling out. You learn about the intelligence, humor and passion of the other in a relaxed and private way.

Well now, let's see, your profile says this:

quote:

I am looking for a woman with a submissive personality to compliment me. I would expect her to be loyal and honest. She should be in Edmonton OR Canada .. And looking for a long term R/t relationship.
I would expect patience in our communications online, with a view to meet up with potential compatible partners within a quick time frame so that you can get to know the real me, beyond typed words.

Why did you post a profile stating that you'd like to meet someone and "expect patience in our communications online" if you don't think it's a good way to meet someone?

Just hard up and trying the salmon method?
