I stopped over in the literary section because one of those prompts above intrigued me. I will say even though I am an older woman who grew up in a drug laced world.. I have no clue about drugs at all.
Never took any, unless you count the few days I was on vicodin for a back injury.

But this quote from the story I read has me stumped.

"His usual post-coital hang-up woke her, and she went downstairs to drop some Valerian root on her tongue and filled up her bong with salted water."

What is this? Ok.. I know what a bong is, I have read stories. But, what is valerian root for? And why salted water?

Salt water in the bong so it doesn't foam with a lot of use and won't grow fungus in the bong.

Valerian is an herb that acts to relieve anxiety. You find it most often in things like "Rescue Remedy" to calm down pet animals.

You'd think that if she's filling up a bong, there's not gonna be a helluva lot of anxiety expressed within about 30 seconds anyway.

Anyone who can put a tiny piece of valerian root in their mouth is a stronger woman than I, Gungadin.

That shit tastes like last month's old socks left out in the rain.

Yeah, it's a sedative and calmative and unless you know what you are doing, it can be dangerous. This is most especially true of valerian in it's natural (non-powdered) state. Fortunately, it tastes so bad, there is little chance of ODing on it or using it to poison someone.

Rescue Remedy consists of Clematis, Rock Rose, Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, and Cherry Plum in the homeopathic (hot herbal) form.

eww.... foam, fungus... that just sounds unpleasant.
very cool on the valerian. My dog goes nuts on holidays that have fireworks involved.

Blast. My current dog only likes tasty things that smell ok. She won't even go near canned dog food and is one of the only dogs I have had that is not a foot licker. lol she turns her nose up so I guess that stuff is out of the question for her.

As a writer, I gotta say, that is a BIG FAT FAIL on the author's part. Something questionable or obscure should be explained simply as a matter of course...

Remarkably apt description, but you're leaving out the stale feces part.

I find that to be the most notable element of the nasopalatal crucifixion that is valerian root... put that on a gag, and something will give.

Most won't. Unless you stick it on a gag (the pun will become obvious right away).

It's simply not effective enough to be worth the taste, IMO, but some like it. Generally it's put in a capsule, but I wouldn't combine it with other stuff. Like most herbs, it will interfere with enzymes that break down drugs in your system. The worst is still St. John's Wort, and the most common is grape juice, but even valerian has some potentially unpleasant interactions. If not for that, I think it would make a great suggestion the next time someone comes looking for a punishment suggestion.

Mix valerian with chocolate and you can have hygienic faux scat play.

Sorry about the coffee.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

That's an interesting idea.

What if the intention is to demonstrate how alien the little rituals of a drug user are to the general readership? Because they are kind of alien, and not always logical.

Will Self springs to mind as a writer obsessed with the paraphernalia of drugs and drug use who doesn't explain a thing.

If 'as a writer' you value accessibility over all else in your own writing that's absolutely fine, but I don't think you get to accuse anyone else of big fat failure (in capital letters, no less) for not doing the same thing. It might be what you do, but it's certainly not a 'matter of course'.

LOL I know, huh? That's why I came here rather than google it. I am sure wiki knows stuff but they are so clinical in their descriptions it is difficult to imagine I would have gotten the dirty sock analogy and that for me at least, gave me practical info more than anything else.

I am constantly amazed at how much people know around this place!

Back when I was going through menopause, I was having huge sleep issues, and being the natural sort, did some research and decided on Valerian tea as a fix.

OMG. Big and I mean BIG mistake.

Though admittedly the cats loved and I do mean loved the smell, I had to throw that shit out. And I am not one to throw out pricey herbs lightly.

For years, and I do mean years, the canister I stored it in (for less than 3 hours) smelled like the stuff. And though it went through numerous dish washings, every time I opened that canister, the cats came running. VALERIAN !!!

I opted for the capsules. They love those as well. I kept some in a pretty air tight container by my bed and they managed to get it open. One morning I found them in cat heaven batting at Valerian capsules. <insert huge martyred sigh here>
