Our plutocracy now lives like the British in colonial India: in the place and ruling it, but not of it. If one can afford private security, public safety is of no concern; if one owns a Gulfstream jet, crumbling bridges cause less apprehension—and viable public transportation doesn’t even show up on the radar screen. Baltimore is hosting a Grand Prix Race right now. I went over to see the INDY cars and the Le Mans cars practice. The course had to be closed down during the Indy practice because one of the cars went airborne after hitting a bump in road. When the driver was asked to characterize the street conditions on a scale of 1-10, 1 being smooth sailing and 10 being too dangerous for racing, the driver said "9." Our roads are so bad here. Next, I was DC yesterday. It has a great Metro System. It was built in the 70s and 80s. It stands as the last big subway system built in the US for an urban metropolis. That's 30 years and no new sizable investment made in public transit anywhere here in the USA. The Republican plan, though, might help. The idea is to starve Amtrak some more to help cut estate taxes.
