Apparently, Machiavelli's scapegoating is more of a "sacrifice the one for the good of the ruler" (earlier, I said "whole"). They said that I could make the case (as I was trying desperately to do, I hate being wrong) that the good of the ruler becomes the good for the people, in a roundabout way, but to me it seems a great stretch to even consider that to be Utilitarianism. I will have to reexamine The Prince in order to get whether or not he believes that the good of the people is the end to aim for, but for now I'm saying my previous position (i.e. Machiavelli was a complete Utilitarian) was probably not correct.
