It's stupid I know, but she was sizing up my thumb, I had a bandaid on it to protect a blister from getting banged, and I knew she was going to peck it, they are infinitly curious about anything out of the ordinary, bandaids, moles, speckles of color on your skin, buttons, yada yada and I could see the lil wheels a turning in her head as she looked this way and then that way and then craned hear head way up to peer at my thumb and me, but I figured why not let her, I've been pecked before and they're tiny painless nips.

Oh HELL NO! This bird had other ideas she latched on an really pinched the shit out of my thumb, and I pulled back and I am laughing and cussing and going ow fuck shit that hurt and my dad's laughing and is all like what did you expect, they can have mighty powerful beaks, and I said well I was expecting a love nip not a chomp down hard.

The bird won this round But just wait, one day I'll sneek up on her when she least expects it or something lol.

Hey! Turkeys make great pets! I had a pet wild turkey when I was a kid that used to follow me everywhere. Most kids had dogs but I had a turkey! lol Everyone who got near me he attacked and trust me no one wanted any piece of him! So you have my sympathies about this! I know how hard they can chomp down!

Ha! Never underestimate the BEAK! My grandmother and I rehabbed a sparrow and that little bugger would CHOOSE where to chomp!

Oh, I have no doubt, Our turkies will size you up like a you're the last steak on the shelf and they haven't eaten in days, and won't get another chance to get that steak. it's pretty comical watching them watch and size you up, you can just see the lil wheels in their heads a turning.

They can make great pets yes, we raised these guys from barely weeks old to full grown fat and happy plump mature adults. Two of the remaining four love to be petted and will walk up and demand petting and then sit there for the loving as long as you'll love on them.

OMG, that brings back memories, of me de-beaking a thousand white apartment house turkeys, as well as raising and slaughtering them and several thousand chickens. Indeed, turkeys LOVE to peck, peck, peck, and like chickens, are carnivorous little buggers. Personally, I wouldn't let either of them near any fresh wounds I had, but apparently you're much braver than I am!

Or more stupid!

The side of the thumb I let her bite wasn't injured, the sore spot was on the inside of the thumb and I would never let her near the blistered side.

Oh, so now it's sore where it once wasn't. At least the thumb is pain balanced now.

You did what to how many?
Please don't tell me that de-beaking
means what it sounds like...

Yepper, Aries, it's exactly what it sounds like, and it's actually necessary, to ensure they do not cannibalize each other in close quarters. No one wants to buy a torn up turkey for Thanksgiving. And once turkeys/chickens taste the blood/meat of another, like a pack of hyenas, they'll take him down like a duck on a June Bug and have the bones picked clean w/in the hour. Not a pretty sight.

You'd grab a turkey/chicken around the body, secure its wings, stick it under your non-dominant arm, walk it up to the machine (with electrically heated blades), and with your dominant hand, hold it's head and stick its beak into it, and then step on the foot pedal. This brings the two blades together over the beak, simultaneously cutting and cauterizing the beak. One tends to trim 1/3 of the beak off, which blunts it. Turkeys have very sharp beaks, and can do much damage to each other. Another reason for debeaking/beak trimming, is the longer the upper & lower beaks grow, the more uneven/distorted they might become, which intereferes with efficient eating, which equals loss of weight and overall health, which means less market weight, which means less profit. I remember the smell of burning beak quite distinctly, but you get used to it.

The one I used looked quite similar to this one:

And if that turns your tummy, Aries, I'm guessing you don't want to ask me about how we caponized young male chickens (removed testes) in the field so they'd be plump and tasty. Might give you nightmares. Actually it's pretty interesting and incredibly easy, but would gross out most folks who are used to getting their meat in the supermarket.

If that doesn't do it, I can take him to a 'teeth, tails and shots' day, at one of the local hog farms.

Yes they can. And nearly dislocate a shoulder when the farmer that owns them procrastinated on doing the work.

Yepper, and screw their back up, as well. They do put on weight pretty darned fast.

Dayuum, hard as it was, I miss all those days. It's good to know how to raise, kill and fabricate your own. May come in handy one day, if the SH'sTF. Then I'll be everybody's best friend!

No offence but that is just one of the reasons I buy pastured poultry whenever possible.

It's more offensive to animal activists that know better.

http://forcechange.com/11726/beak-trimming-of-chickens-is-cruel-and-must-be-stopped/

oh and my Grandmother had a farm. Til she became vegan at 45 and lived to be 97. Also, entirely no such thing as organic or humane farming, more lies.

Not to people that know how to survive without killing sentient beings. Like me.

It doesn't "turn my tummy", I've hunted, killed and
butchered birds and rabbits for food...
I've operated on myself for crying out loud...
I've put down animals to put them out of misery...

One thing I haven't done is mutilate animals for
money, and then brag about it...
congratulations.
