Wicker: America’s $16 Trillion Debt Represents Failure of Presidential Leadership

Runaway Government Spending Has Led to Unsustainable Fiscal Path

The signs of a lasting economic recovery have yet to emerge after nearly four years of the Obama Administration. The country’s economic growth hovers at a near-standstill, and millions of Americans remain without work.

Rather than implementing solutions, President Obama has worsened a tough economic situation with a big-government agenda. Under his watch, the national debt has reached an unprecedented $16 trillion. To put this into perspective, spending a dollar every second for 32,000 years would only amount to $1 trillion – a fraction of the federal debt.

The Problem With High Debt

American taxpayers are ready for an honest debate about the drastic rise of government spending. The President’s costly policies and failure to seriously address the debt crisis continue to burden the struggling economy. His unsuccessful $1 trillion stimulus and health-care overhaul are troubling examples of reckless spending and unfulfilled promises.

Concerns about the impact of high government debt are widespread. Economists and business leaders have already noted its drag on economic growth. Adm. Michael G. Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said debt is America’s top national security threat.

Comparing the federal debt to gross domestic product (GDP) helps to illustrate the magnitude of our fiscal situation. The total national debt is now more than 100 percent of GDP. This means our debt exceeds all the goods and services that the U.S. economy produces in one year.

More Broken Promises

In 2009, President Obama was quick to condemn the nation’s debt dilemma, pledging to cut the annual deficit in half by the end of his first term.

Instead, the President’s rhetoric has not become reality. Federal deficits have topped $1 trillion every year that President Obama has been in office. In just one term, the national debt has skyrocketed by an extraordinary $5.4 trillion.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the current economic outlook is worse than previously thought. Unless fiscally responsible measures are put in place, the country’s sluggish economic growth and chronic joblessness will persist. Delaying action only perpetuates uncertainty in the market – hampering job creators’ ability to grow and hire.

Putting Debt Reduction Into Practice

Mississippians know that better leadership and pro-growth strategies are necessary to solve the difficult fiscal challenges ahead. Cutting spending, keeping tax rates low, and meaningful entitlement reform are important ways to start.

Families and businesses in our state understand what it takes to live within a budget, and they are right to demand that the federal government do the same. More than 1,300 days have passed since Senate Democrats have fulfilled a basic congressional obligation and passed a federal budget. The President’s own fiscal blueprint for more spending, taxing, and borrowing was rejected by every Republican and Democrat in Congress earlier this year.

Ignoring the severity of America’s $16 trillion debt will not make it go away. Americans are ready for sensible and effective action, and it is time for members of both parties to work to make debt reduction happen.

This is of course being put out by a Republican senator undiluted by the media.

What it doesn't mention, and in fact avoids mentioning, is that a major part of that $16 trillion national debt has been spent on the military.

See any mention of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Has Bush been mentioned? Congress? No, only Obama, it's all Obama's fault.

He's also not saying anything about the connection between Republican presidents and war.

In 1984 Reagan was 15 minutes from declaring war on the Soviet Union - nuclear war. Margaret Thatcher goaded Bush Snr into the Gulf War in the 1990's. His son, George W. Bush started wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

In fact, one could argue, given that there's been some talk on the right of attacking Iran, and Romney's visits to the UK, Poland and Israel, that some sort of pattern is emerging here. Wasn't it Bush who visited the UK and Poland early on?

This isn't any sort of conspiracy.. just speculation on my part.

But what is your take on what Sen. Roger Wicker is putting out there from his own personal website?

I wouldn't consider Romney because he's unable to answer clear, direct questions about his participation in the after-death baptism of holocaust victims.

At first, Americans do not elect the president. They select between two candidates who have been set up for them by the elites. If I was a voter, I would not be part of this game. People who decide to make a selection should vote for change. Then there will be hope. Obama government is basically a criminal mafia: apparatus for wholesale looting and wealth transfer to the super-rich and perpetual war machine. Change of the whole administration has a potential for better.

For there to be hope there has to be some visible potential, and for that one needs to have a pretty clear vision of where one is going.

There isn't, as far as I can see, that clear vision, just two sides in conflict, each one blaming the other, each one stating that they will be better but not providing any arguments or details as to why.

The two party system has run its course and deepened the rift between left and right.

Therefore...

Change of the whole administration has a potential for better.

..this is the part I agree with. However electing Romney leaves a lot of conservatives and those on the right disenfranchised.

How about splitting both parties, the GOP and the Dems? The existence of both parties isn't written in stone.

My reasoning is thus - politics isn't meant to be rigid or fixed, but fluid and dynamic and most of all relevant to a society, the economy and its needs and wants.

When politics becomes fixed it becomes an institution, and it ends up that people serve politics rather than the other way round. There has to be progress.

With four parties instead of two you kickstart the democratic process, and the emphasis changes from conflict and finger pointing to discussion and cooperation.

It all depends where you want the power - with the people or with the government.

Republicans have had their chance at rule - all I remember is Bush rule and Terri Shaivo having the ability to shut down congress.

Wild, unsubstantiated and hilarious allegations.

Set up by the elites? Obama won a hard faught Primary against the Clintons. Rmoney won a Primary against a number of candidates. WTF are you talking about?

Wholesale wealth transfer to the rich and perpetual war is quite exactly what Rmoney/LyinRyan represent. Clearly, a choice in this election.

Please pay attention

Where did Obama come from? Who selected him as a contender? Both H. Clinton and Obama had no qualifications to compete for the post (a small community organizer and a wife of the former president). What was the reason Romney became a front-runner? Who elected him? Who decided the man is the best US citizen to lead the nation. Electorate? WTF are you talking about?

Age and Citizenship requirements - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1
No person except a natural born citizen,  or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

I say they did.

I wouldn't want to vote for Mitt Romney because he's a wanker, Stella. You forgot to mention in your list that he's a wanker.
