tazzygirl -> Labor Day (9/3/2012 1:52:25 PM)

RICHMOND, VA - Today, Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-07) released the following statement commemorating Labor Day:

"This Labor Day, too many of our friends and neighbors are out of work. Hard working families are struggling to make ends meet, college graduates can't find good jobs and small businesses aren't hiring. If we are to grow our economy and get Virginians back to work, we need to do everything we can to help our small businessmen and women succeed. Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success. I am committed to keeping taxes low and reducing red tape to make it easier for Virginia's small business owners to start hiring again, create more jobs and ensure a thriving economy for the future so more people can achieve the American dream."

Im sure most of you know the media explosion this will create.

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Sometimes I really think they dont think before posting stuff.

Anyone else feel this is a day for the small business owner?

Don't they labor as much as the once proud Union members? I'd say if anything, the small business owner labors much harder than your average union member.

Labor day might have been about the American worker once upon a time... But that's progress for ya, the union guy takes the day off, the small business owner keeps his shop open to capitalize on the holiday.

I bet Chik Fil A is open today... Just sayin'

I would include them among those whose labor we celebrate. Having grown up in a small business, I know how tough it can be.

That said, Cantor does seem to be spinning the holiday for his own political ends.

It will surprise no one who knows me that I prefer the Book of Common Prayer's take on this day:

For Vocation in Daily Work

Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory
and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the
earth: Deliver us in our various occupations from the service
of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in
truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of
him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For Labor Day

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another
that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide
us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but
for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for
our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of
other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out
of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Did he go shirtless for it?
Thanks for the alert, I'm going to tape my windows so they don't shatter in the media storm that is no doubt headed this way.

Maybe it is about staying away from this?

The Pullman Railroad Strike, largest industrial strike to date in U.S. history, eventually broken by federal government troops, resulted in at least 24 strikers killed, & Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader President Grover Cleveland suspended the constitutional right to assembly (the ability of any two or more people to meet in public) in seven states.

Personally, I think it tawdry and desperate for republicans to glom onto labor day. I also think it will be short in duration. in fact, it will be over in 10 minutes.
And I will bet my molars that we don't see a peep out of Cantor in regard to this next year.

FR
Labor day is a holiday that came
about as a celebration of and a
holiday for laborers. Working men
and women who helped build this
country with the sweat of their brows.
It has never been about business
owners large or small. This we built
the barn while everybody else stood
and watched right wing bullshit is
getting beyond ridiculous.

Grover Cleveland pushed it into
law after the ratfuckery that was
the Pullman strike. Grover was
skeered and trying to make nice.

One of the reasons it's observed
in September is lawmakers didn't
want it associated with International
Workers Day which is observed on
May 1. The reason it's observed on
May 1 is that's the date of the
Haymarket incident in Chicago.
Workers were striking for the
eight hour work day and it ended
with the police killing demonstrators
and a few of their own men.

We have labour day too pretty much for the same reasons americans have it, and to hear Cantor dribbling made Canadians laugh in derision
