Goliath is picky. He will not touch frozen food. But he sure enjoyed his rat tonight!

The stores will only sell mice as pets, and charge a comparative fortune for them.

Was it captive bred?

Some years ago I worked in the reptile house of a safari park here in the UK. It is very unusual for a snake to refuse dead vertebrate, especially rats. Fortunately here in the UK its illegal to feed live vertebrate, so when people purchase a healthy young snake, they can be assured that its already happy to consume dead mice and rats.

The problem with feeding a snake a live rat is the injury that rat can cause to the snake. The rat has been put in a canned hunting environment (very inhumane) which is very unnatural and he knows he is dead meat well before the strike. Rats have big teeth, can be very aggressive and can do a lot of damage.
The reptile vet who worked with us often told us about some of the horrendous injuries he had seen on snakes (especially ball pythons who are particularly vulnerable because they are more docile and curl into a ball when intimidated) brought to him that had been attacked by rats. A large rat can take a snake out, especially if left in the tank when the snake isn't hungry.

About the video sent by the dusky,
It was a lovely story and one touched my heart. Its not so much about the dog being rescued as seeing such acts of kindness from individuals. Sometimes I feel like the worlds just one big fucked up place but then I see films like that and know that theres still a lot of people out there who care.

Maria, we do not know Goliath's early history. We have made several attempts to get him to eat frozen food. We don't know why he won't. One theory is that because he lives in a high school biology classroom, and feeding time is a class event, the constant heat signatures around him have desensitized his strike desire. He needs that motion of live prey to trigger a strike.

The rat he had last night, a Silky, or African Short Haired Rat, was just a small hopper. He lasted less than 90 seconds. Goliath was VERY hungry.

Back to the OP......I showed this to my little girl last night, and she wanted to bring the dog home right away.

Dusky,

I've noticed that you do a lot of posts about cute animals. Yet, in Ishtarr's thread about guns, you mention that you own a hunting rifle (amongst other guns).

I don't quite get it. Are you a lover of animals, or are you someone who hunts them? If both, how does that work for you - do you have problems resolving both impulses?

I might be inclined share this if I didn't think I was going to be disemboweled by the self-proclaimed spiritually elite.

I don't know anyone who hunts for fun and sport. All my friends that hunt, and there are many, do it to fill the freezer for the winter.

Really? That's interesting. Of course there's less of that tradition here.

I still want to try woodlice. Am I the only one?

You find 'em, I'll saute 'em.

If I had a pet python, I'd call him 'Colin'. Just saying.

That is all.

Why not "Monty"?

And regarding hunting for food...they've killed every blessed thing over there!! Here, a couple deer and you've got food for the winter. Michigan is a big outdoors state, and while going after big bucks is a thing, the meat and hides don't go to waste. Hunters and fishers are the backbone of the DNR.

Dusky, I think the spiritual elite has stood down...
