What your description reminded me of was not a crucifixion but a stoning. The setting and various other elements of your description were in place, though, including the march to the orchard and the religious overtones. There was no INRI placard but there were inevitably clear signs of what had just become of the sack full of red stones she had so carefully and innocently collected on the beach for me a couple of days before--not too big and not too small. The beach was a brief stop on the way back to my place from the airport. We had corresponded off and on for years but were only just meeting for the first time.
Inspired by your post I was reminiscing about all this for a bit and I finally recalled that after she stood for the fusillade she was tied with arms outstretched between two trees. Sitting, though, not standing; only her upper body suspended. Some pheasant flushed from the underbrush nearby just about then. It was lovely, but still not a crucifixion of course.
The last thing she heard before I walked away, apart from the ruffle of the rising game birds, was: "This is your chair, (and the name I had given her)."
It is striking what can result when you say certain sorts of things to a person who is that far gone on fear and pain and endorphins and relief and, well, devotion. We're still in touch and she still talks about that chair every once in a while, longingly. More often than she talks about the stoning itself, come to think of it.
By the way, every year, instead of Easter communion in a certain town in the Philippine Islands, volunteer Catholics--men and women--are crucified with real nails. These undertakings are said to be not sanctioned by the church.
