I was googling to see if I could learn why skunks are spraying almost every night about this time. I haven't found an answer to that yet, but found this interesting article on coexisting with skunks.

http://www.wildlifehotline.org/skunk.html

The following topics will be discussed on this page:

- I can smell skunk spray in my house - what should I do?
- My dog has been sprayed. How do I remove the stench?
- There's a skunk in my window well; why doesn't he jump out?
- How do I get a skunk out of my garage?
- Skunks are digging up my lawn! How do I stop this?
- How do I get a skunk family out from under my deck / shed?
- I have a cat door and found a skunk in my house. What do I do?
- There’s a skunk in my pool. How do I get him out?
- I see a dead mother skunk by the side of the road surrounded by babies. What should I do?
- I set a trap for a woodchuck and caught a skunk. How do I get him out without getting sprayed?
- There is a skunk with a yogurt cup stuck on his head. What do I do?
- Do skunks carry rabies?
- There is a skunk in my yard during the daytime. Isn’t the skunk rabid?
- There’s a baby skunk running around by day. Is the baby rabid?
- Do I have to worry about my children being attacked by a skunk?
- Do I need to pay a nuisance control trapper to solve my problem?

Skunks hate noise.
If you live in an area where you can put out some speakers and play loud music (death metal or something) or one of those really obnoxious noise makers for a few days they may move on. Raccoons are like that too.

If you live in a neighborhood where you can't do that you'll need to call a trapper. Make sure they are the catch and release kind though. Not fair to kill the poor skunks just cuz they moved to the wrong neighborhood.

I don't want to get rid of the skunks; I'm just curious as to what could all of the sudden make them be spraying every night.

Territorial? Because they should be looking for winter dens pretty soon. And the babies are now adolescents, and you know how teen aged boys get. Same thing if they're teen aged boy skunks.

I used to have a skunk that would den under the side steps every winter. We'd go up and down them moving fire wood, letting the dog out, and he never objected. We stayed on top of the porch and he/she lived underneath it. You knew spring was finally here when it moved out.

I'm thinking moth balls may discourage them from going where you don't want them.

I don't think they are on my property because the smell is not overwhelming, it doesn't come in to all the open windows, and closing the windows keeps out the smell.

I would have thought it was too early for fall denning (this has been going on for a few weeks), but maybe that is it, or the adolescent angst.

Thanks all!

Skunks are just adorable. Unfortunately here in Iowa, there is a bigger concern than their scent and where it can go........rabies. They are one of the worst carriers. If a skunk were to linger in my area too long, I would be concerned.

We've had problems with them getting into the bee hives. Skunks LOVE to eat bees. Especially when other food is scarse. Fortunately they do tend to be rather shy animals and our hives are in the furthest corner of the yard from where I take the dogs in and out. When winter months are upon us, and it's dark a lot more, I often take my dogs outside, first on leash......that way I don't have to worry about a skunk surprise. Gives the skunks a chance to vacate. They also love to come into the orchard at night and munch on fallen fruit. Right now it's the few pears that were produced, that are falling from the trees. They are attracting quite a following....deer, raccoons, skunks, possums, etc...

Here is a good link about them...cool skunk stuff

I used to have a pet skunk. She was sweet, but really stupid.

They're also rabies carriers.

Is it possible that the odors are coming from area road kill?  This time of year in many areas the nights are starting to cool off while the pavement stays warm, creating a tempting yet often fatal lure for many animals including skunks.
