For the make pretenders.....this can be independently confirmed from other sources.

Looks like Obama isn't spending in Michigan either:

Conservatives pull ads from Michigan

Pro-Romney groups focus on key states; Obama's campaign off air for weeks

Mitt Romney's conservative allies are bypassing Michigan with their advertising while stepping up efforts in other battleground states — suggesting campaign strategists don't believe his road to the White House leads through his native state.

The pro-Romney groups American Crossroads and Americans for Prosperity are pouring nearly $13 million into advertising in key states, indicating they remain eager to lend considerable financial muscle to Romney in states viewed as truly competitive.

There are no presidential campaign ads of any kind airing in Pennsylvania and Michigan, according to information provided by media trackers to the Associated Press.

One reason the Romney forces may have pulled money out of Michigan is President Barack Obama's campaign and a political action committee supporting his re-election aren't spending here either, said Rich Robinson, director of Michigan Campaign Finance Network.

"You don't spend money if you know you're going to win or you know you're going to lose, and Obama hasn't spent five cents" in Michigan, Robinson said.

I like the comments from the article in the OP, including this:

So Rove and Romney pull their ads at the same time?
Sounds like collusion to me. Get the FEC to investigate.

It will be confirmed in November.

As John French Kerry would say; "would that it were, would that it were."

I'm having a hard time taking this seriously. If Romney can't compete in those states, he's ceding 36 electoral votes in an election where he'll need every one he can muster. The odd thing is that, in article I've read, the MI GOP operatives all are saying that MI is a must-win for Obama and that his path to the White House must pass through Michigan. Delusional - Obama doesn't need those votes. Romney needs Florida and Ohio, and a bit of luck besides.

John King explains, not very well, that if Obama wins MI and OH, Romney has a very tough road.

Looking at 270towin.com if Rmoney has given up on MI and Pa his route to victory basically requires he win both Florida and Ohio as the remaining other "in play" states won't get him to 270. Seems to me with all the money he and his supporters have to spend an all the eggs in one basket strategy is basically conceding the race.

He needs to pursue a true 50 state strategy to try and flip one or more of the decided states

Together, Romney and Rove have more money than god. Why would they both pull any money from any state unless Romney isn't supposed to win.

I'm looking at Michigan and The Keystone State through my Boss' eyes. He said a month ago that Romney's advertising strategy has been in bursts, and that it's been rumored all along that he would rely on a big rebirth of the birther, NDAA, and several other right wing myths as a mid-October surprise, along with a "wounded look" emergence (Used very effectively by George W Bush "The smart guy with fuzzy math beat me up. Please let me run your country into the ground using my own fuzzy math". )  from the debates along with a big push on the economy.
He did also indicates that he feels Obama's crew may have one of their own.
I think this is a strategy playing out.
