To hear several speakers in Charlotte - and I don't think this is jump (?) - they were essentially saying you don't care about the U.S. military because you didn't mention U.S. troops and the war in Afghanistan in your nomination acceptance speech. (....) Do you regret opening up this line of attack, now a recurring attack, by leaving out that issue in the speech?

ROMNEY: I only regret you repeating it day in and day out. (LAUGHS)

BAIER: Well I mean, what just came from Charlotte -

ROMNEY: Because when you give a speech, you don't give a laundry list. You talk about the things that uh you think are important.

Just so everyone's totally clear, Romney didn't talk about the military at the convention, so he doesn't think they are important.

The military is not an issue for this election. In fact, he's 100% right. The military is not important to this election cycle except for their votes. Having been in the military, I don't think this is any kind of slight at all. In fact, I think it shows a hell of a lot of confidence in the military. They aren't an issue, which means that out of all the fucked up shit that The Failure in Chief has done in the last 3 1/2 years, the military is the one and only thing Obummer hasn't managed to fuck up.

It shows confidence in their support of a Romney victory in November, because he did not feel the need to pander to them and make them a special class of citizens. That's a tired, old, transparent Dumbocrat class warfare tactic. The folks that serve are not idiots. I don't think there are many people in the military whose vote will change just because Mitt Romney didn't give them a shout out, or switch parties just because Barak Obama did. You apparently think they are stupid enough to do just that, which shows how little you and your ilk really think of the men and women in our military.

Obama was very clear in his speech: “As long as I’m commander in chief, we will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known”.
The campaigns are efforts to manipulate masses. Military issues are controversial topics. It is hard to tell what the public sentiment is. How many people believe in Empire? How many realize the country is bankrupt and the military spending needs to be cut? So, my guess is, Romney campaign decided to avoid this subject area. It has nothing to do with Romney per se. I am sure behind the scenes he has given assurances to the military-industrial complex they will not be touched.

For Romney, there are only two kinds of issues:

1. The economy. That's how he intends to appeal to independents.
2. Social issues. That's how he hopes to hold onto his base.

Obama's unassailable on the military. He's killed OBL, avoided new wars while still prosecuting the ones we're stuck in, and Michele is doing outreach to military wives. Plus, invoking the military will remind voters just how W bungled the wars. Romney's once mentioned support for the military funding in another speech, but wouldn't try to use it at his convention.

Many good points here. But who are the independents? Maybe they are educated and employed and smart enough not to pledge to either Party. And maybe smart enough to reject supply side economics and Rmoney's empty mind on foreign policy. We shall see.

He didn't talk about it because he plans to jack up military spending as well as cut taxes, exactly the strategy that created this economic mess, but paid well for the wealthy at the top.

Politicians don't only not mention things which aren't important, they also don't mention things which are important but which they don't want you to know about.

I think you're right. (Which is interesting, because on his website he mentions increasing military spending as part of his platform.) I also think that him talking about the military and war would make people start asking him about whether he was planning on going to war against Iran. There's definitely been some noise about that on the Christian Right, but I just don't think most people really want to do that if it's at all possible to avoid.

After reviewing my original message, I have decided that I was not making my point clear, and would prefer to simply withdraw from the conversation.

Yet, they believe it is UNDER funded, and needs even more money then they have asked for. Why would they need to drastically increase funding if they feel it is not suffering from any issues?

This is why Romney talked about military spending.

Good for him. You START by just shutting down the entire Air Farce. Paying them unemployment is cheaper than buying them airplanes.

And the Navy and Marines have their own air components anyway, so we're not losing any capability. And since I don't see any congressionally-declared wars ( you know, with rationing and a draft... ), we don't really need an Army, do we?

So, the Navy keeps our SLOC clear. The Marines can go bust heads when needed. And **IF** the Chinese attack, we can draft up an army when we need it.

So, what's the savings in the military budget after we cut out the army and air farce?

Army $244.9 billion
Navy $149.9 billion
Marine Corps $29.0 billion
Air Force $170.6 billion
Defense Intelligence $80.1 billion[10]
Defense Wide Joint Activities $118.7 billion

So, we let's say we need a skeleton army struture to fill out with a draft. Give the Army 5 billion for that, so that's a savings of 240 billion A YEAR. Adding the cuts to the airforce, that's 410 billion a year saved. Since there's less people to pay for, the D and Joint activites, let's just halve them, too... That's another 100 billion.

Giving our total saving, WHILE ENSURING OUR NATION'S SECURITY, of about 500 Billion dollars a year.

Well, the budet is balanced, and we we have a surplus now for universal medicare. The only people who can bitch and moan are those CURRENTLY MAKING MONEY OFF THE STATUS QUO, and we can ignore their feeble protestations their entitlements getting cut.

My guess is that the only vestage of a middle economic class in this country are those employed in the war toy industry.
If we took your advice do you think that those folks could be retrained to produce something worth while for mankind?
