In a moment of stunning sanity, Ryan deftly refuses to rule anything out.

Romney of course had bought into the Norquist code of never raising taxes nohow, nowhere, never. But Ryan very sanely held that he refused to rule out a plan in the abstract and wanted to see a concrete proposal before saying yea or nay. He did say that we're overtaxed, but conceded that additional tax hikes could conceivably be used to address the debt, although he showed a clear preference to cutting spending. He implied that he spoke for Romney, and then went into some gobbledygook about closing unnamed loopholes.

Romney/Ryan are stunningly confused in their political messages, torn between the T-Party and the Middle. tick tock, tick tock . . . .

The problem is they don't really have a coherent message. They're gyrating all across the board trying to grab any sound bite that they think will appeal to this or that or the other, with no real philosophy to speak of beyond seizing power and running Teh Kenyan out of office.

The problem is that Romney/Ryan need to play to both the right wing of the GOP and the independents at the same time. A difficult balancing act.

They're sort of playing good cop/ bad cop.
Romney's campaign has been muddled,
unfocused and all over the place from the
get go. So, such a strategy fits in with the
rest of the confusion.
