Of course, it's illegal to pressure an employee based on political views. The idiot politician is pastor of a church and a dedicated foe of gay marriage. The unexpected twist - he's a Democrat.

I saw that, was wondering who was gonna post it.

He is wrong in what he did. Using his political power to try and silence this guy.

And he realized it.

After drawing national attention for his attempt to muzzle a football player who supported gay rights, a Maryland delegate walked back his position Sunday and said Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo should be allowed to speak out in favor of same-sex marriage.

"Upon reflection, he has his First Amendment rights," Del. Emmett C. Burns Jr., a Baltimore County Democrat, said in a telephone interview. "And I have my First Amendment rights. … Each of us has the right to speak our opinions. The football player and I have a right to speak our minds."

Here is the players response to the initial criticism.

I fail to see why a democrat must support gay marriage simply because he may be a democrat. The issue has it's supporters and opponents in all walks of life.

Ah, welcome to the basement.

LOL

It has nothing to do with him being a Dem or a Republican. It has everything to do with others in politics telling people how to live their private lives and using religion, or in this case, his political clout, to silence someone else's belief.

I am a Democrat.. and I would not vote for this idiot.

OH MY GOD!!!! SOMEONE IS EXPRESING AN OPINION I DON'T LIKE!!!!

Well, at least the dick finally (although I suspect, reluctantly) realized that we have something called the First Amendment in this country.

I wonder if he would have been as upset about Ayanbandeo's speaking out if he had been anti-gay marriage. I am dubious.

The fact that he is a democrat doesn't surprise me. Neither the democrats nor the republicans have a monopoly on virtue or vice.

There's nothing unexpected about it. The African American community is overwhelmingly Christian and not the new age-y kind. So as one should expect there's a huge amount of homophobia there.

This is local politics here folks. MD is a democratic as Utah is republican. You wanna play ball in this state, you gotta be a dem.
And much moreso among the African American community. And waywayway moreso among the inner city congregations where the Dems have ruled with an iron fist since 68 or so.
It's pretty common to see a Dem preacher and his flock in naptown supporting issues that are more often affiliated with the Christian Right.

You would be in a rather minuscule minority.

He gets reelected by Democrat voters overwhelmingly ever four years. (There are virtually Republicans in his district)

Emmet Burns is beloved in his community.

I am going to say you meant virtually "no' Republicans.

And I like being in the minority. I prefer my principles and being able to sleep at night.

Doesn't a "Democrat" or a "Republican" HAVE to support the official "Platform" of their political party?

It is my understanding that the delegates at the Democratic Convention vote what is to be the official 'party line' of the Democratic party;
then, this official Party-line is to be the standard on which what being a 'Democrat' means.
Thus every 'Democrat' who expects funding from the Democratic party
or to be endorsed by the Democratic party must either agree with the party platform or be quiet.

So even though this anti-gay-marriage Democrat does have the right to free speech,
he does NOT have the right to label himself a 'Democrat' when he will not follow the official Democratic party platform.
Ordinary Democrats may call themselves a 'Democrat' even if they will not follow the party-line,
but not political office seekers or political office holders.
The Democratic party platform does now have a 'plank' supporting gay marriage, and therefore
the Democratic Party leadership can cut off funds or remove the voting booth 'democrat' label from this guy if they want to.
After all, if he is against gay marriage then he is now following the Republican Party platform, not the Democratic one,
and he ought to switch parties if he wants to exercise both his freedom of speech AND hold political office.

Nope, they don't.  It is one common way to have RINO offspring, for instance.

Actually Baltimore and most rust belt city African American communities have voted overwhelmingly Democratic since the mid sixties, mostly due in small part to Kennedy's overtures to Dr. King but far more so since LBJ and the great society. In Baltimore, the community has voted straight dem at about a 80% rate since the MLK riots.

Which personally I find kinda funny. I mean, since 68, the city has declined precipitously. Between crack and poverty and corruption and poor schools and HIV and an alarming male incarceration rate (Hold on and get ready for this stat-60% of African American male Baltimorean's between the ages of 16-65 currently live under some auspice of the criminal justice system, either prison, parole or probation. Think about that for a minute.), decaying neighborhoods, destroyed families, no economy and B-mores status as the heroin capital of America, I don't see how the Republicans could do worse.

I used to live in New Orleans, which is pretty much as sleazy as a town can be. It's corrupt in ways most folk can't imagine.Just old school graft all the way. I lived in Miami when the whole city was for sale in the mid eighties. I'm seen amazingly venal shit pulled by politicians out for a buck. So I'm saying something when I tell ya that Baltimore is by far the most corrupt and least competent city I've ever seen.
And the General Assembly ain't much better. MD is one of the richest states in the nation and we somehow have a 2 billion dollar deficit. In a city that starves and closes libraries and day care centers, with an majority poor African American population, the city and state have pumped millions into a farcical grand prix that nobody wants or attends. At one point, the state legislature had been rated by the feds in the bottom three state legislatures in the nation five years running. These fuckers don't even bother to hide the kickbacks.
A few weeks ago they passed a new law expanding gambling in the state.
The very first law they passed afterwards retracted a prior law preventing casino interests from making political donations.
Fucking amazing.

If I were a Black Marylander I'd vote Republican, simply because they have nothing at all to lose.

And, getting back on topic, Minnesota Viking Punter Chris Kluwe posted a letter on deadspin supporting Ayanbadejo that might just be the funniest response ever printed. He fucking skewers the pastor. It's absolute hysterical (and accurate) must reading
