I dont look for arguments... I look for discussions.
Discussions are meant to bring in fresh ideas from different perspectives.
Forgive me for believing you were capable of such.

If you weren't looking for an argument, why did you jump on me about the Medical Community and torment? That had nothing to do with anything. We agree that the Medical Community has a better idea of the type of life that awaits one with a disorder and those who give birth to one with a disorder. We agree that it's the parent(s) who make the decision about aborting or not.

We have 2 areas of disagreement within this thread:
    1. Late-term abortions being an option in cases where the baby is likely, or guaranteed, to be born with a disability
    2. Who defines what "torment" is for someone

After the age of viability, I don't support abortion, except in cases where the choice is between the mother's life or the unborn's. I believe you can not determine the minimum level of difficulty that would be considered "torment" for me, or anyone else but you.

You and I need no more discussion on any other points within this thread.

Fortunately I will never have to make this dreadful decision because I don't live in the USA. If I did live there, and was faced with appalling set of options listed in the OP, this is the option I would choose.

It wouldn't be a difficult decision for me to make. The most difficult part of the decision for me would be whether I bought a one way or return ticket. I doubt that I could bring myself to feel any enduring loyalty to a State that forced such barbaric choices on women.

could not agree more

if men make laws about pregnancy, they should a) do the job themselves in the future or b) shut up

subspaceseven -> RE: Rape-babies (9/20/2012 1:53:59 PM)

Well as it turns out one state has proposed a bill requiring women to "prove" they where forcibly raped...Yea GOP lead states

If adopted, this policy will have numerous implications. It establishes in state law a narrow definition of rape that can and will be applied in other areas of law and policy. It puts a heavy burden on women who have been raped and are now struggling economically to support a child or children to prove the manner in which they were raped and to meet a test set up by the state to exclude many women in need of childcare assistance who would otherwise qualify.

It would force women who have left violent domestic partnerships, who were date-raped, who were impregnated as a result of incest, or through other “non-forcible” but nonetheless equally violent and denigrating means of sexual violation to first re-engage with their abusers to seek child support, putting control of their lives back into the hands of someone by whom they were violated in the most profound sense of the term.

I'd guess in extreme circumstances, there would have to actually be a conviction as that's the only way to prove a rape. By then, the kid will be in grade school.

Maybe some high powered congressmen need to be raped... just so they know the utter humiliation of having to go through the reporting process, the rape kits, the giving testimony, the cross examinations, the digging into backgrounds, the finger pointing and snickering.

But this is fundamentally the problem in almost any society with the issue of rape, but also other issues relating to women. Most men (and men dominate political decision making), unless they have been sexually assaulted themselves, cannot truly put themselves in the shoes of a woman in that situation. It is fundamentally why male politicians will always trivialize the experience of not only rape, but pregnancy and labor. Not having to actually experience these things makes it oh so very easy for them to be dismissive of these things.

Women, on average, are more understanding of the issues that other women face, and understand why both protections, and freedoms are required, but even in the U.S. we are not as influential politically.

And the scariest persons of all - conservative women. I was going to say something nasty. Bite my tongue....[>:]

Rule -> RE: Rape-babies (9/20/2012 2:09:53 PM)

In my opinion it is necessary to prevent rape babies from reproducing themselves in order to reduce the frequency of rape alleles in the population. Ergo: it must be either sterilization for them or a life long stay in a celibate monastery.

These same choices ought to also be given to the rapist and his near relatives.

Rape is not a hereditary predisposition.

Ive said it once - I'll say it again, these assholes that are spewing this shit, need to be put in a jail-cell with a few convicted rapists for a few hours and see what they say when you let them out. All I would have to say to them afterwards is: "Its a real sad note - isnt it?"

So my conclusion is that you blab your mouth without having any argument to support your assertion. Henceforth I will call you Blab.

And for anyone wondering about such characteristics as stupidity, kindliness, heartiness, intrepidness, courage, cowardice, etcetera, etcetera: yes, those are programmed by alleles too.

tazzygirl -> RE: Rape-babies (9/20/2012 3:27:51 PM)

You still havent offered a shred of evidence that rape is hereditary... as usual.

No, it is you who misunderstand. Try to find any evidence that rape is contained in a hereditary allele. There is no scientific support for this. This is not an assertion on my part. This is fact. If you would like to disprove, then point us to conclusive evidence that demonstrates this.

subspaceseven -> RE: Rape-babies (9/20/2012 5:48:34 PM)

ain't that the sad truth

NiceButMeanGirl -> RE: Rape-babies (9/20/2012 6:54:04 PM)

I'll tackle these questions. I've been viciously raped twice when I was in my 20s. Once by a stranger and once by my almost ex-husband before the divorce was final. I used to be very naive when I was young. I was also a staunch pro-lifer but, in the last 20 years or so, that has changed.

- would you feel blessed because "God" gave you the chance to give life?
No. Why would I feel "blessed?" Is the rapist doing "God's will" or something? I seriously think NOT. The Goddess I believe in is loving and she wouldn't choose that route to make someone pregnant.

- would you cherish your baby?
NO. Every time I saw it, I'd think of the rape. I have PTSD from the others already. I wouldn't want more on top of it and then have it triggered every time I look into a child's face. Could you imagine having a PTSD attack every time you saw your child?

- would you be set up to bring a child into the world?
No. And I don't want to be.

- would you have the money to bring a child into the world?
No, but even if I did I wouldn't do it.

- would you pay to have the child and give it up for adoption?
Hell no. I'm a birth mother in a closed adoption situation due to circumstances in my life at the time long ago, and there's no way in hell I would ever go through with a closed adoption again. It's the hardest thing I ever did in my life. Plus, my labors were 41 and 24 hours and I know I could not go through that and be thinking the entire time that it's only happening to me because of some sick bastard forcing it on me. That would fuck with my head WAY too much and I just would not do it.

- would you go on welfare to have the child and give it up for adoption?
No. See above answer.

- would you leave the country to have an abortion elsewhere?
I would if I had to.

- would you try to hurt yourself or the baby so it dies?
- would you kill yourself?
No. I don't want to hurt myself or die, I just would not want to be a mother to a baby that made me think of the rape every time I saw it.

General question - what if the child came out retarded? missing limbs? cerebral palsy - etc. and you dont know the genetics of the father - so you dont know what happened, the raped mother may of been so stressed out, that it actually harmed the fetus - what then? Who takes care of it? Who wants to take care of it?
This is a difficult one. Obviously, on this question, I will be less than objective. My own brother has cerebral palsy and, even though our family was poor, he was raised by my parents with no outside financial help. He's 53 and still a loved part of the family. I can't imagine aborting a child just because of a birth defect.

What kind of base person would point fingers and snicker at rape victims?!? How fucking low are we, as a population, going to devolve?

What kind of person even wishes rape on another human being? I seem to remember some college kids getting roasted for even thinking about/mentioning the word regarding some of their fellow classmates.

The double standards abound from the left!

Peace and comfort,

Michael
