We just got our male puppy Thor neutered and his loose dew claws removed so they wouldn't catch on anything. Since Thor has stitches in 3 places, we're keeping him and Xena separated for a few days. When Thor runs up to Xena in her crate, she goes ballistic (loud low pitch barking, growling, and snarling). When Xena is out, she runs up to Thor in his crate with her ears down and tail wagging. I feel sorry for poor Thor. Any ideas what would make an 8 month old German Shepherd act like that?

It's because he smells like a vet - ie. antiseptic and other dogs.

It will take a few days to get his smell back.

Sir thinks it's heat related but she's only 8 months old and not bleeding. It could be a combination of both the vet office scent and her being territorial. Fortunately, she never acts that way toward us. Just strangers and other animals. Thanks for the input.

at eight months old she should have had a season already, or be due anytime now. however, if she is ok when she is out of her cage then it's because she is in her own area, and doesn't want him there. my patterdale bitch is the same whether in season or not. my male border collie is not allowed near her area.

btw, a bitch can show in season for a total of 3 weeks, bleeding or not. she will ovulate a couple of days before the end, then will go back to her normal self. the age the bitch is at when she has her first season is usually the space between each season.

According to the dog whisperer, dogs respond to energy/attitude. It may be that your puppy Thor acquired bad energy/attitude as a result of the operations.

I recommend that you consult with a local dog behavior expert.

or she could just save her time, and money by giving both dogs space until thor has healed properly. or that the bitch has gone through her season.

If Xena was upset by the vet smell she'd behave the same towards Thor regardless of where they were, not only when she's in her crate. It isn't unusual for dogs to become territorial about their crates, even towards the dogs they live with. German Shepherd Dogs have a high propensity for guarding to begin with. It's most likely a territory guarding issue and it isn't odd that it just recently started since she's only 8 months old. If you don't normally keep one closed in a crate with the opportunity for the other to run up to the closed crate, that's another reason you're just now seeing it. You need to keep a handle on the behavior and make sure it doesn't spread to guarding other things from Thor or guarding things from you and any other humans in your household.

True, Nala isn't exactly welcoming to male dogs. And she has always required a very firm hand. Not a lot of people are as able to handle a GSD properly, as they believe themselves to be. Especially one with a dominant nature.

I still believe it has a lot to do with the scent Thor brought home with him. Lots of other animal scents came home with him.

And........get the female SPAYED ASAP!!! Be a responsible pet parent.

Spaying female dogs can cause incontinence. Neutering never has that effect on males. We have carpet. I'd rather Xena wear diapers twice a year when she's in heat than all the time. Therefore, we decided to neuter Thor and leave Xena intact.

Accidental pregnancy from an outside source is always a risk, but highly unlikely when the male dog in the household is neutered. If I was an irresponsible pet owner, I wouldn't have had my male neutered. Would you want an incontinent dog if you had carpet? You do know what incontinence is right?

I just spent 5 minutes reading, and incontinence is rare, and treatable. The good that spaying does is indisputable. Preventing pregnancy and cancers are just the beginning of the good it does your dog.

And, if you think a bitch in heat won't find a way to get out, you really do need to so lots of research. It would have been preferable that you did it before getting pets, but, it isn't too late to do the responsible thing.

I have dogs and have never heard of such a thing. What a crock of bullsh*t, I have never heard of such rubbish. Having a female dog spayed will cause incontinence, if you believe such garbage you really need to be the one who seeks help. I have had several dogs spayed and never had one pee on any carpet. What a load.......
Let us just be truthful and say you don't want to do it, because it costs so much. Or that you think you are smarter than everyone else by claiming it is for your carpets.

That is like claiming oh if a woman has to have hysterectomy she is going to go home and pee on the carpets. You need to get a clue.............[8|]

Dogs are naturally "den" animals. When you have a dog in a small space, it becomes their "den", their territory. When the puppy comes up to her territory, she guards her asset. (Its the same reason why dogs in cars bark at you in the parking lot)

When she is outside of her kennel, she responds differently because she's not guarding her territory any longer.

Emphasis mine on cancer prevention but it should be something the OP stands up and takes notice of.

Having had several female dogs all spayed I can say none of them developed incontinence.

I am wondering if perhaps the OP was hoping to breed the female and sell puppies?

Every female dog and cat i have ever had has been spayed - and not one of them peed on the carpets. If it really is a side effect of hysterectomy, then it is very rare.....

Much better to get her fixed and not have to worry about puppies not being wanted.


and my birds have the same reaction when their cages are approached by other birds. Keep them apart until they can be together.
