Missokyst -> Windows 8 (9/15/2012 9:53:26 PM)

I just installed windows 8 into one of my hard drives. OMG. it is a completely different experience and I am not sure I like this thing at all. Seems like they want it to have a mac feel to it. blech. If I wanted a mac I would have gotten one.
I sure hope they tweak this thing into something more user friendly. At least on a mac you can see the controls, you don't have to ferret them out of some corner.

Anyone else out there trying out the pre-release? What do you think of it?

Heard rotten things about it from a friend, not gona bother with it; I'll stick with 7.

It's pretty slick and smooth but yeah I prefer 7.

You can get used to the new layout but understand that Win 8 is NOT intended as a replacement for 7. 7 is likely to continue as the PC/Buisness platform for sometime to come. Its shelf life is liable to be extended via patching. Hell Win 2000 is still around on millitary systems and patched. Anyway maybe my microsoft account manager was talking BS but his take was that 8 is intended for home use on tablet/phone/cloud use tied to Office Online (360 or whatever) as oposed to to corporate/hardcore users.

That said if they DO discount the MS Surface tabs down to cheapo prices (ie even better deals that the Google Nexus 7 or Fire HD BUT tied into a 360 sub, ie ongoing cost but subsidised upfront cost) then those are going to be a very attractive deal. Especially as they come with encryption and other business friendly tools.

In my mind Apple and Mickysoft are trying to push android and google into the niche 'techy/cheap' market while dividing the home/office enviroment between them and in particular recent court cases and Office 360 for Mac/IPAD is the way they see it going. Be intresting to see Goggle's responce.

When I originally heard about win 8 I thought they said it was for phone, tablet use. I can see it as a valid system for those purposes but heck, if I wanted that I would get a tablet. Since I am a tech I sort of have to learn about junk I don't plan to use on my own to be sure I can clean it when necessary. But I won't be using this thing on my desktop. I really hate that dummyup click this button mentality that is so prevalent on new toys.
I can see this thing is designed to mess with google.

It's a great touch screen OS. It's an OK desktop OS. the biggest issue is that anyone on Windows 7 and not having a touch enabled screen has virtually no reason to upgrade to it.

Win7 is an excellent desktop OS. And while Win8 isn't a bad OS for the desktop, all that was added/removed/changed is almost entirely centered around a touch interface.

Now, if they push touch interfaces on laptops as a more standard approach... I could see it doing very well there. The combination of "at your fingertips" touch screen + mouse and keyboard would be very effective.
