ABC News has confirmed reports that Mormons posthumously baptized President Obama's mother five months before the election. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints confirmed Tuesday afternoon that someone improperly, posthumously baptized the late mother of President Obama into the Mormon faith. Last June 4 -- the day after then-Sen. Obama secured enough delegates to win the Democratic presidential nominee -- someone had the president's mother Stanley Ann Dunham, who died in 1995 of cancer, baptized. On June 11, she received the endowment. The baptism was first reported by AMERICAblog's John Aravosis, who found an ordinance record on the Mormon genealogical Web site, FamilySearch.org. Mormon Church spokeswoman Kim Farah said that "the offering of baptism to our deceased ancestors is a sacred practice to us and it is counter to Church policy for a Church member to submit names for baptism for persons to whom they are not related. The Church is looking into the circumstances of how this happened and does not yet have all the facts. Well, it is Mormon policy to do so. It is called proxy baptism for the dead. In 1995 they agreed to stop baptizing Jewish Holocaust victims, but otherwise, they do baptize people regardless of their original religion. http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/16/explainer-how-and-why-do-mormons-baptize-the-dead/ I look forward to my posthumous Mormon baptism. They were still doing it for Holocaust victims after 1995, they just deny it. One of my co-workers told me her mother was a stand in for these ceremonies here in San Diego.

FR They post baptized Daniel Pearl and his parents released a statement about it. I find the whole business very distasteful and offensive.

Most of my grandmother's relatives were killed during the Holocaust. They were killed because of their religion. Then Mormons come along and decide that the only thing that matters is what they think.

Absolutely tasteless...and not helping in their efforts to be considered as an actual serious religion.They wonder why the jokes about magic underpants won't stop ?

FR: I'm a little torn on this one. As a Christian, I don't care who "posthumously " baptizes me. I'm dead, I've been baptized in my religion and I have left this earth and it will not affect me at all. I don't think my family or friends would care either. If make some other group of people feel better about themselves.... go for it. It's pretty much a non issue to me. I don't see it any differently than a Catholic sending me a Mass Card or lighting a candle in their church for me. I don't believe in doing such things, but if it makes them feel good and that they are honoring their beliefs, I accept it with grace. I kinda sorta see how some one else would be offended, but I would question if they are offended if some one says a prayer for them or lights a candle or says " God Bless you" when they sneeze. One of my best friends is a Buddhist and brought me a lovely Buddhist pendant from a trip she made to her home country. I'm not offended by that and I wear it often and I don't feel I am disrespecting my God by wearing her gift. The post humous baptism seems very similar to me.

Depending on the religion, it may make no difference at all. Or it could make a massive difference to the one's left behind. I would be very offended if any religion baptizes me without my consent... dead or alive.

I would prefer they leave me and my ancestors alone, we'll return the favor and not make Donny and Marie posthumous Druids. I wonder if they post baptize people like Stalin and Ted Bundy? Heaven just wouldn't be the same without them.

I understand that side,Tazzy. I really do. For me it's a non issue. I'm looking at this as what spiritual/religous people do to honor one's passing. Personally I think a post humous baptism is silly, I also think Mass Cards are silly, I think ceremonies to unveil a grave stone or marker are silly, I think sweeping and casting the circle are silly.... but I am not offended by it. It's just how some people practice their beliefs. I just don't have a problem with other religions carrying out their rituals in my name after my death. If it brings them peace and they feel better about my death.. I'm OK with it. I would not be OK with participating in it, if it were my loved one who passed. But just them doing something on their own would be OK with me. Maybe I'm an oddball on this one. < shrugs >

It is taken as added insult and contempt by those whose parents and grandparents were herded into gas chambers or gunned down by the Einsatzgruppen in 1941 as a final solution solely because of their religion.

As I said twice... I understand the other side of the arguement. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything.. simply my take on it in regards to my own life.... or death.
