Currently, there are only two US states that separate HIV positive inmates from the rest of the prison population. In Alabama, HIV inmates and ACLU are taking the separation issue to court saying it violates their rights under the Americans With Disabilities Act.

If prison rape wasn't encouraged by the prison administrations in the US and condoms were made available for use during consensual encounters this would not be an issue.

In addition to rape, there's also fighting. If one inmate knocks another inmates teeth out, there can be bleeding knuckles and bleeding gums. If somebody with HIV or Hepatitis C wanted to fight me, I'd run.
