I don't think branding is quite as painful as you imagine. Yes, PAINFUL with a capital P...but not like childbirth, or having a compound fracture. I met a man a couple weeks ago who has his deceased best friend's initials branded on his shoulder. He didn't have much of a horror story to tell about the pain. I myself accidentally "branded" my arm a few years ago when I was tinkering, got distracted and aparently my bare arm made solid contact with the hot manifold. I heard a loud "hsssss", looked around for the source, smelled burnt flesh, and finally discovered My arm had a black mark on it....THEN it hurt! OH YEAH! MUTHERF@---! (afterward the dull ache lasted maybe a week but didn't interfere with wearing clothing) and it was DEEP too...an actual "brand". 5 years later and it's still there, though finally starting to fade. It's about 1.5x1.5inches in size...probably average or even bigger than most "Oath" brands would be. Be sure to clean everything, and prepare the site with plenty of ice, have ice handy for afterward. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, so it doesn't need to be re-applied! It could be considered an honorable "rite of passage" if done with ceremony. My boys are TOUGH, if they wanted to be marked this way, I'd certainly approve it. Fair enough on the tattoo thing. But, even though you probably designed the tattoo and it is your mark, in a sense, it's not the same to Me. The difference is that I didn't do the work Myself. That's why clip doesn't have a tattoo, but he has been branded and he's got the cutting on the chest that I've done. The next thing will be the violet wand brand that Hib mentioned. Not only are they cool as hell, but you can work your way up on the pain level. I attended the class given by a fellow presenter this year at Northern Exposure and the method is fantastic. Less risk of infection, etc than hot strike brands.

Master wanted to brand me at my collaring ceremony, but due to us having a VERY hard time finding someone to make a brand, he wasn't able to. Instead, he gave me a scarification on my chest above my heart. He still wants to brand me. And I know it will hurt, but I will proudly wear it :)

Getting branded is just as good a treatment for cancer as any currently practised. Next time, and there will be a next time, try cryogenic surgery w/ Argon gas. Also, check DNA and splice youngest family members p53 gene into your DNA or at least uses new stem cell.

I once 'branded' myself with a curling iron. I didn't like the smell of burning flesh then so I'm not sure I would want to brand someone. At least, I don't think I'd want to witness it and for something that important I feel I would need to be there. Maybe if it smelled like rose petals or jasmine, then I'd say yes.

angelmaleslave, I don't have any training to do brands. Yet. Funny that you mention a permanent marking, because later today bo and I are going to his piercer (who also does tattoos) to get him his first tattoo. We've known each other for a year and a half. The first anniversary of his collaring passed us by recently and for his upcoming birthday, we got him registered at the slave registry. His number will be tattoo'd over his pubic bone later today. [;)] This is something he has begged for...and it is not something we are doing lightly. My first name won't be branded on him for another year.
