Smart move to protect our Embassy and our supply lines or craven apology and betrayal of freedom of speech?

Marked by the U.S. Embassy seal, advertisements condemning an anti-Islam video appeared on Pakistani television on Thursday in an apparent attempt to undercut anger against the United States, where the film was produced. Hundreds of youths, however, clashed with security officials as they tried in vain to reach the embassy in Islamabad amid anger in many countries over the film's vulgar depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

It would have helped if Bush hadnt installed a corrupt regime. He would also have been well advised to carry out his original aim of destroying OBL and AQ, instead of diverting military resources to his phoney WMD invasion of Iraq.

I dont see the ads as anything but a smart attempt to defuse tension.

The purpose of the ads is to prod the Muslims into yet more rage.

Bush could have a done a better job in making sure they kept Bhutto from being killed. Probably the last hope for a long time to make something in Pakistan right. Worst case scenario we leave and they gather themselves and start to look east again at India......then we are all fucked.

Condemning the video is not the same as banning it. The video has not been banned in the U.S. Free speech is alive and well. The U.S. government, in its official capacity, is allowed to respond to the video however it sees fit. That is also freedom of speech. And I think, under the circumstances, they are simply trying to protect our people in Pakistan. Our right to free speech does not actually apply to what goes on within Pakistan. They have their own laws there. Our government is trying very hard to protect our people who are there. I think it is wrong to confuse the free speech within the U.S. issue with the defense issue of protecting U.S. diplomats in foreign countries.

The U.S. government is also completely entitled to assure other countries that the offensive video was NOT a U.S. government sanctioned video. In other words, it represents one person's viewpoint, but it is not an official video - because some people in these countries assume if it comes from the U.S., that the original video is somehow "approved" by the government (because they don't have the same free speech laws in their country). I see nothing wrong with the government pointing out that it had nothing to do with the making or distribution of this film, and that it is not government policy to go around insulting other people's religions.

Hoping that the Euros start pulling out in 2013, leaving us no choice but to follow. Then the neocons can bitch at the cowardly socialists for "losing" Afghanistan
