She walks well on a leash, she has from the day i met her . she's just not very active. Most the time when I am up and about she's snoozing somewhere. Her file says she is a couch potato and prefers to lay at the feet of her people and stay close to them and is not very active.

But she is mostly very willing to come when called, to show some moxy when I talk to her in silly voices.

The puppy mill bitches the rescue gets are terrified of everything. They're between 5 and 7, usually 7 and they have no human skills, no idea that humans can bring good things, and be nice, and they're super shy. It's really sad.

You know she "can't" do that, LaT. We've been there before.

It is true that puppy mill bitches are often VERY unclear on the concept of things like walking. My late friend adopted a puppy mill bulldog and her daughter is amazed at the comparison between Pen and her own bulldog Georgia. After a lifetime of being crated or kennelled she is not into moving around, because it's not what she understands as natural dog stuff.

Which is not to say that she didn't get a LOT of work from her adoptive humans, and walks on a leash now, though she is not sure what the point of it all is. Part of RESCUE is rehabilitation.

I don't think this is animal abuse.
I think this is an instance of Tfb only being given part of the picture from the rescue league.
I don't think the rescue league explained that it could be different; they just explained how things were.

Tfb,
Walking her will be good for both of you.
Her being sedentary carries the same risk as you being sedentary: weaker muscles and stiffer joints in the long run.
Plus taking her out on the leash is a good way to reinforce that you are alpha to her and is a good way to bond on top of that.

Clever girl, you.

Get a bottle of bubbles. Blow them for her. Let her chase them. Dogs love chasing bubbles. Then all YOU have to do is sit there. If that is too much for you, then buy a bubble machine. At least that way one of you will be getting the exercise needed.

I never thought of that. You know I love my babies and would not want to do that to them.

Tfb,
I do know that about you.

Wakling her will be win-win for you both.

And even if she won't play with or engage the bubbles , I love bubbles!! Haven't played with them for ages. We have to get some Monday!!!

Any excuse to show off my Horatio. I myself can't always walk as far as he would like. Even though we walk a mile, twice a day, he is still full of vigor at 7. I use bubbles as a way to supplement his exercise. Finishes him off for the afternoon, and then it's nap time. Give it a shot, might just work for you.

Gorgeous photo, Delilyah.

Pure and simple...this is an easy one....she wants attention. That's what animals do. She wants you to take her outside and go for a walk or play fetch in the yard.

Just because the shelter said she's not active means nothing. It just means they were looking to get rid of her. It means they want YOU to get HER to be active! Golden Retrievers are active dogs no matter what their age or the shelter tells you. They are just telling you how the dog reacts at the shelter, nothing more.

And if you're sleeping all the time, leaving the door open for her to go in the yard means nothing at all. She NEEDS to be walked A LOT! Not just left out in the yard while you sit on the couch or sleep all day.

If you can't be active or teach it to be active then you need to take it back to the shelter.

ETA: Yeah, if you can't even walk a block it's time to give the dog back. you CANNOT manage that dog or any other dog from what you write. Please stop. You're not being a very good owner at all. Sorry.

i don't know anything about your dog, or dogs in general, so please take this with a grain of salt as appropriate.

We used to have a rescue cat who was found and rescued after spending a fortnight with the corpse of his last owner. On the most part he was well adjusted and really sweet. Ever so often. though, he would go up to one of us when we're napping (but not, funny enough, when we're properly in bed) and smack us on the nose or nibble on our fingers. The vet and rescue folks thinks he's trying to make sure we're not dead (or, as I tell it to guests, "he's checking to see if you're dead enough to eat") due to the previous trauma.

As others have pointed out, TFB has never taken anyones advice here. Some threads that come to mind, are asking about drinking large amounts of soda, and a question along the line, ' are frozen pizzas healthy. If TFB can't manage to walk around a block, she is very close to having a serious stroke or heart attack. I wish her well.

I'm not sure how that's really a problem. Chipping in on forums is very much like being polite, done because the person doing it wants to, not because the person receiving it wants it :)

It is indeed a sweet picture!

ServosCor -> RE: If I have been napping for several hours she seems depserate to wake me up. (9/23/2012 1:13:32 PM)

If this is happening on a reoccurring basis, have a good checkup done for yourself. My friend's golden, who is almost 3, would know before she did that a heart problem/dizziness was about to occur. He is a very wound up dog and would suddenly sit/lay with her, putting his body/head across her lap. She saw a cardio Doc and sure enough, somehow, some way.........the dog was sensing something wasn't right with her and acting accordingly.

Dogs are so much smarter than we give them credit for!

cor~~

TFB would not take her doctors advice. That would mean a healthy diet and exersise. That isn't going to happen.

Hehe. I know the feeling - I feel the same about my Ruby (Maine Coon).
