TheHeretic -> On Free Speech (9/22/2012 7:31:40 AM)

Now this is the sort of piece that goes very well with Saturday morning coffee.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-20/how-muslim-extremists-can-learn-from-larry-flynt.html

quote:

The best statement of our constitutional rule remains the one announced by the U.S. Supreme Court 40 years ago in Police Department of the City of Chicago v. Mosley: “To permit the continued building of our politics and culture, and to assure self-fulfillment for each individual, our people are guaranteed the right to express any thought, free from government censorship.” The government, said the court, “has no power to restrict expression because of its message, its ideas, its subject matter, or its content.”

FatDomDaddy -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 10:21:23 AM)

But but but.... what if it's "hateful"???

DaddySatyr -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 10:28:00 AM)

As a holder of minority opinions my entire life, I hold this amendment to be the most dear and I feel that without this ability, our republic would crumble.

It's kind of ironic in that it is such a double-edged sword that it almost always cuts someone.

Sure, I wish there was a legal way to shut up the KKK or the Neo-nazis (or some of the PPLs on this very forum) but, I learned a long time ago that most of our constitution (and specifically our Bill of Rights) has to apply to everyone or it means nothing to anyone.

I had a really difficult time with the whole flag-burning thing but, like it or not; it is a form of speech. Some would say it's an action (and it is) and I support fire laws being upheld but because flag-burning is a protest it is exactly the kind of thing to which free speech must apply.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Nice to see the head in the sand crowd freely expressing themselves. Carry on hating guys and all will be well.

TheHeretic -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 11:26:26 AM)

That sounds a little hateful, Polite. Are you allowed to say things like that? [8|]

[8|] yourself.

I wasnt hateful, I was just very very dismissive of your nonsense.

Your intent is meaningless. You called us the "head in the sand crowd," and I've decided to claim to be deeply offended by that.

What's the number to Scotland Yard? We need to shut you up, before you are responsible for more violence.

Dont take offence, it was as polite as I could get. [;)]

Oddly enough, It is cheaper for me to call friends in Arkansas and Texas, even on their mobiles, than to phone my brothers mobile who lives 3 miles away.

TheHeretic -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 11:39:51 AM)

Unlimited long distance is not what we mean by, "Free Speech," guys. [;)]

DaddySatyr -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 12:17:59 PM)

I don't see where there was anything hateful on this thread until someone came along and decided that they saw some (while calling us all names).

That kind of screams "Hate" to me but I've come to expect that of some people and just understand that they're obviously very troubled people, themselves.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

If all you're doing is dismissing it, why the fuck did you feel the need to respond at all?

If you dont understand, an explaination wouldnt enlighten you any further.

FR

Ah, 'free speech'. This would be the 'free speech' that enabled Goebbels to portray Jews as fat, thieving shits; just as it's enabled some arsehole here on CM to portray "Islamists' (howsoever 'Islamists' are to be defined by the thickie in question) as murderous, scythe-wielding enemies of free speech.

I'm an enemy of any cowardly turd who thinks it's OK to spread around hate-propaganda which puts me in danger of being attacked by other turds like him just because of my colour, religion or culture. If the 'First Amendment' had a pointy bit at one end, I'd be so glad to thrust it up the anus of any lover of that particular species of 'free speech'.

I hope that helps. [:)]

I don't need an explanation, really. You're just trying to get your two cents in where you want them, although it isn't going to move the discussion further.

No, Peon, that would be more the result of the state having a chief of propaganda. If there had been free speech, more people might have been talking about what slime had come to power in the government.

TheHeretic -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 6:13:15 PM)

US law on free speech runs a bit different to what some are used to, DesideriScuri. If they need to declare our Supreme Court's opinions on the matter to be "nonsense," well, so be it.

The groundwork had already been done by the time Goebbels took his position - by Goebbels himself and many propagandists like him, TH. This kind of thing generally does start as 'free speech', but ends up as 'the only acceptable kind of speech'.

TheHeretic -> RE: On Free Speech (9/22/2012 6:45:56 PM)

Watch close, Peon, and you'll find folks in these forums saying just as nasty things about Republicans and conservatives, as the Nazis ever had to say about the people they wanted demonized. Do we need the, "I thee rape," episode of Doonesbury, or will the commercial with "Ryan" and the old woman in the wheelchair do?

You know the difference? We are free to stand up and speak right back into their faces. More, we are free to hold their words up and show them to the world, for the totalitarian freaks and fucks that they are.
