I'm never impressed about Mod-bitching threads. This one won't be any more impressive, I understand.

But after the tremendous and sustained effort to cleanse this basement of gratuitous name-calling, I'm very disappointed to see that following the "please report" strategy isn't effective when the offense is racist or deliberately mocking other posters' loss.

So here's the thing . . . life will go on with barely a ripple. But for what it's worth, I don't want to be part of a board where racist remarks about war paint to describe Native Americans are fine, and where, even after given a heads up that several lost friends in 9/11 and find no humor in it, deliberate tasteless jokes are posted and mod-proof.

It's not my site, and not my call. But I'm disappointed, and choose not to participate where this is tolerated.

Carry on.

I must have missed that thread. The wife absolutely HATES it, when I tell a 9/11 joke, but it hasn't been grounds for a divorce.

The problem here is that such boards as this and almost all other boards reflect a what is revealed to be a very, very uninformed (ignorant) world out their so most cling to the anonymity of the Internet to feel very free...to express that ignorance in all too frequent bouts of racism and mocking some 'preferred' group or individual.

When logic and knowledge are not present or involved in using most boards and most threads on them, it reflects also the very dire concept that without them...there would be no boards at all.

To say I'm unhappy about the mods over the issue of the "war paint" thread is an understatement.

Totally ignoring the 9/11 stuff despite reports was also disappointing.

I didn't miss that thread Rich, and I agree wholeheartedly with Tim on this.
I thought the thread in question was beyond the pale and reflected very poorly on the poster responsible
But as Tim said in his OP,this is just MY opinion and,in my case at least,it means less than zero.

So you'll be leaving too, Mike?

Got a hint for where this awful thread can be found, before you delete the bookmark to the site?

I've always felt that as a society, we have embraced a tendency for people to look for reasons to be "victims".

I am ¼ Native American by blood. I was not raised in that culture (because my grandmother pissed off the tribe) but, I do identify as such. While I realize that face paint was not only used during times of war, I can understand why it is called that and it doesn't phase me, at all.

Also, I lost four people on 11 SEP 2001 (Two in New York and Two in DC) and I have to tell you that while there's little I find humorous about it, I have giggled when a couple of comedians have gotten on the subject.

I think we need to spend more time laughing at ourselves and less time trying to be victims. I think humor is a way for us to cope with pain but it's also humor . By definition, it's not to be taken seriously.

What bothers me even more is serious (or they're meant to be) comments that defame or denigrate but, we see examples of it, all the time. It's very easy, these days, to call someone a racist with little reason to suggest so. It happens all the time and because that is such an easy thing to do and so potentially damaging to a person's life, career, or sense of being it should be curtailed (self-censorship, I'm speaking about) as much as possible but, it won't.

Sometimes, we just have to put on our big boy pants and let idiots be idiots. It's their right.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Thanks, Lucy, but I got the "deleted or moved" screen on both links. If that reflects the reality though, then I don't see a problem.

(psst. Don't tell Muse, until after the election, though. )

If the problem was a loose nut behind a keyboard, I'll do my own search. The 9/11 Jokes sounds familiar.

Leaving,no(you would miss me ,right ?)
Just registering some mild displeasure....as for the link,no I can't even remember the thread title (I'm referring to the 9/11 thread...the war paint thread I haven't even seen)but it was distasteful,to say the least, outright disgusting to say the most.Add to that the fact that it was put up on 9/11 and one can see how the intent too was more than questionable.
p.s. perhaps you can use the date it was posted to track it down Rich,I don't know how that works....but you might

After finding them, I have to say that I personally do not see racism in the warpaint comment. Mom was 1/4 Cherokee, and I spent a lot of time in NC getting to know her kin and family. Saying that warpaint would be worn to a debate like the one the thread refers to is not a stretch at all, IMHO.

As for the jokes re: 9-11. Some were funny, some were tasteless, IMHO, but I would wager that cops and firemen that lost friends have some that would curl our toes more than anything Firm posted.

Sometimes dark humor is one great way of getting through a tragedy. It is what it is.

Followed the link to the "war paint" thread....I get the feeling I'm not seeing the depth of the issue with this one because the mods cleaned up this thread, that of course is their job and for the most part they do a great job.

Thanks, JstAnotherSub!

That's what the OP is all butt-hurt about? I see a little Gamma-style came into the "warpaint" thread, so we can chuck that part of the argument.

As for the jokes, that post came on 9/13, and is a topic I'm pretty sure we have done before. Sick jokes are cathartic for some, and how we deal with tragedy. If some others need to be out of the room when we heal in our own way, the should find an exit.

And the, "Look! Up in the sky!," joke is really fucking funny.

No offense intended, Lucy. The loose nut behind the keyboard is usually me. I just really haven't been checking out all the threads lately, and am likely to cost myself money if I don't click away and get my damn traffic school completed.

You are an advanced, civilized person, DS. I salute you.

I also found some of the 911 jokes distateful - and others funny - and some both. But I too think that we need to be able to laugh about these matters.

I agree. I have been called racist, whereas in fact I am not. I blame such false name-calling on some people being either or both uneducated and/or incredibly stupid - whatever population they belong to. In fact I rather suspect that such people themselves are racists.
