Ninebelowzero -> The TSR2 story (9/24/2012 1:47:58 AM)

The TSR2 was/ is a great conspiracy yarn in it's own right.
It was a long range deep penetration supersonic heavy bomber. It was designed with one purpose in mind to go make fiery mushrooms all over the Soviet union.
Designed in the '50's, built in the 60's it was light years ahead of anything the USSR or USA had or would have until the mid 80's. Having seen the only one left (i think) at Cosforth Air Museum It would of had stealth capability on par with the Soviet technology of the time. Also it still is a good looking machine.
Only one problem it was a first strike weapon platform, it really had no use as a retribution wep as it would be glowing in the dark on the ground before it could be used.
& this is where the conspiracy comes into play. For years it was openly alleged in print that the Prime Minister at the time, Harold Wilson was a Soviet sleeper agent who had risen through the ranks way beyond the KGB's wildest dreams. He ordered the planes destroyed, the blueprints burnt & the tool & dies melted down. Alongside withg hiis cancelling of the UK space programme which was on par with the US at the time (Thor I think it was called) which was also an ICBM platform as any rocket really was at the time & the shitcanning of 2 main battle tank programmes which would of given Uncle Ivan a bloody nose at ther Fulda Gap & the Royal Navy cuts which gave the USSR parity in the North Atlantic until the late 70's early 80s took Britain out of the power projection game in the cold war era.
Rumours & allegations continue to this day, & although the main players are either dead or dribbling idiots it's still a thing to openly print that a former Prime Minister was a traitor in the service or a despotic enemy. A book I read recently openly proposed that Wilsons out of the blue resignation as PM in the late 70's was due to him being told that a coup was up & running with the approval of the Monarchy to replace him with a military junta headed by Lord Mountbatten until a purge of ALL parties for sleepers could be carried out. By no means was it just the Labour party that was rotten to the core.
Certainly documents & testemonies from Soviet Sattelite organisations such as the GRU have openly admitted to infiltrating various organisations such as Trade Unions CND & the Greens across Europe & to also bankrolling them, this also includes the IRA., Red Army Brigade, ETA & Baader Meinhoff.
So was Wilson guilty, Was Marcia Falkender his handler as alleged? I don't know, I would certainly like to think so. If not he was a useful idiot. For sure his suicidal fiscal policies laid the groundwork for Thatcherism. Other players don't fair well under close scrutiny either, Michael Foot being one

I have no knowledge about these matters. I suppose, though, that secret deals were made between various interests. There is a lot more going on in the worlds of business, politics and spooks than the public at large ever learn about.

One of those deals could have been: If you bankroll various terrorist organizations in our countries, I will terminate our bomber plane.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: The TSR2 story (9/24/2012 6:27:53 PM)

I designed that airplane, and I alone canceled it.

Aneirin -> RE: The TSR2 story (9/24/2012 11:48:16 PM)

What is amazing about that aircraft, the technologies destined for it are still classified, so it was meant to be a serious piece of kit, and I remember seeing the last one at Cosford Air Museum and thinking what the hell is that, it looks fantastic ! But at least it's engines found use with the ill fated Concorde, an example of which also decays at Cosford Air Museum along with other fine aircraft from a time when Britain used to be something.

But Cosford Air Museum if anyone is interested

There is a few shots of the TSR2 in there.

But it seems many have lost pride in this country and think back to when they could have pride and those times seem to coincide when Britain was something in the world, when we had an Aviation industry, a Shipbuilding industry and a Car building industry, all mostly gone now and with that a lot of hope
