I don't know enough to help you myself, but here are a couple of threads to get you started:

My thanks to Athena for pulling up the past threads.

I'll say here what I said there. The beginners (101) class on was that I do is 90 minutes. When I do that, I'm speaking faster than I can type and there is also visual demonstration. That's a lot of material to try to cover on a message board.

To answer the quick question that you listed.......

I use paraffin wax. I make My own candles so I know exactly what goes into them and what is safe to use on human skin. Other folks use soy, but the paraffin leaves the skin softer, in My opinion.

Preferably, burn the candle until you have a pool of liquid wax. If you tilt the candle to the side to "hurry it up," it still works, but you'll get some residual soot in the wax as well. If you prefer to use jar candles, rather than candles where you light the wick, that's no longer an issue.

Methods? I prefer drips, unless I'm specifically using stencils, brushes, etc for art. It really depends on what you want to do and what you want the final product to look like.

If you're using the right kind of wax and ensuring that you have enough distance between the wax being poured and the skin, you shouldn't have any lasting marks. There may be some temporary redness depending on how closely the wax is held to the skin, how light (pigment) of skin a person has, and if you are using the wax at it's proper melting point or if you are using excessive heat when using jars. The wax may melt at 125 degrees, but that doesn't mean that is the temperature of the wax in the jar.

As for advice, I'd really suggest that you try to attend a class or have somebody who is experienced in the play give you some instruction. Even though wax play is BDSM lite, the potential for harm is still there. The scars from burns can last a lifetime if there is an accident.

ETA - I think I got this right. Here are some that I made. https://flpics1.a.ssl.fastly.net/39/39163/0004bb56-4027-066e-f5ab-a91cbfa86000_110.jpg

I use the scented kind when camming or playing on my own. They melt at a lower temperature, so its a nice warm feeling instead of a painful burn. That being said, you should always keep water or cooling spray on hand in case something does wrong.

I find hot wax play as intriguing as watching paint dry, but... when attending a recent demo on the subject, I was told the opposite about what candles to use. I have no idea of the truth of the matter, or any intentions on finding out, but this is probably something you want to nail down before play, not after someone has burned up skin.

And that, right there, is why it isn't always a good idea to try to learn about BDSM play from the internet! Because somebody, somewhere is going to put up bad or incomplete information up, which someone is going to follow and get themselves hurt.

SWD, whoever was doing the demo you attended was right. The exceptionally high majority of candles with scent aren't the ones that you want to use on somebody's skin. Those scents/perfumes are basically a type of oil that burn at a much higher temperature than the wax itself. It's not a 100% absolute. There are a couple of folks out there making BDSM candles with scent, but I couldn't tell you one way or the other if they were really safe or not.

While I'd have to disagree about wax is only as fun as watching paint dry, I really appreciate you getting on this thread, SWD to say what you learned at the demo you attended.

-fast reply-

Short of making my own like LadyPact I think I would only use candles specifically made for BDSM just in case. Healing a burn is a much longer and more painful process than healing a bruise from an accidentally-too-hard hit. Personally I wouldn't trust my knowledge to stray outside of that.

Common sense would tell you that any kind of additive is going to change the melting point, be it colour or scent. I would expect the melting point to rise, though I'm sure in some cases it goes down, but I do not wanna test that on real human skin to find out.

The other concern about scents and colours is that they could irritate the skin, unless you know absolutely for sure they are skin-safe.

WhipLuvr - you weren't by any chance thinking of Scentsy type wax were you? We have those electric burners which melt pools of scented wax and they don't get very hot at all as a safety thing. I still wouldn't want it on my skin though, I'd be worried about irritants.

I specifically took My profile off of the hide setting so that I could make this post. I did it so that people could look at My itty-bitty little town that I live in, because it's part of the story.

I'm almost getting to the point where wax is something of a crusade on My part. It seems like folks are getting hurt because they aren't doing it safely. It's happening all over and it's not just stuff that people make up to scare others.

Even here, local to Me. In this very small town, where somebody makes candles for this purpose, it still happens.

In small towns, everybody talks to everybody else. That includes the guys who work at the fire department, who were discussing one of the calls they went on because....... You guessed it! They got called because somebody had burned themselves so badly with candles they bought at the store that they had to call 911. (In that person's defense, there really isn't an Emergency Room here, so the fire company was probably their best option after the damage had been done.)

I can't tell you how disheartening a story like that is to Me. Not when the education is available.

I was originally trained to use a "plumber's candle" because it burns at a lower temperature. Pick them up at the old fashioned hardware stores.
I know someone who uses a liquid candle without burning.
IMO - the key is start higher and slowly lower until it is too warm/hot to the person receiving the wax. It is imperative the target be able to give feedback.

my Mistress has played with wax on me a couple of times. She uses beeswax. The hottest of them all! NOT recommended for the inexperienced! She does it a height so it cools before it hits my skin. It's very sticky. The slow removal afterward is the most painful of the play for me.

Not recommended for anyone, never mind the inexperienced. I hope to god she knows what she's doing, because this is one of those stories that ends up like LadyPact's conversation with the fire department.

I love hot wax but I know Master isn't real big on it because of the mess it makes. You end up picking up pieces of wax for a week. lol

I've had all kinds of different waxes used on me, including beeswax and yes it is much hotter and melts extremely quickly, it's something that takes a little knowledge to use; knowing the melt rate and how far above to hold it over the area you are aiming for and if using beeswax, taking responsibility and know that you might end up with some serious burns....it happens like anything else in bdsm....accidents happen.

a plastic drop cloth from walmart (in the paint section) eliminates the "picking it up for a week" thing. and they are pretty damned cheap, too.

eerrr...the plastic doesn't help if he's using a cane or whip to take it off.

Hot wax on fresh welts. Yum. Made me giggle like a kid because it tickled. Confused nerve endings I suppose. Paraffin is definitely safest. I've has the religious candles in tall jars used for color effects. Haven't run into any that were too hot yet. But I've always seen whoever was topping me test the temp on themselves first.

Never use bday candles. It's fun and whimsical on your bday but they drip flame as well as wax. Just a tiny burn on me but I've heard of others not so lucky.

Classes, demos and being mentored are always a good idea no matter what kind of play. I went to plenty of classes in the beginning not because I wanted to learn how to use a whip, do needles, tie someone up etc. I went so I knew enough to know when the top really was experienced enough to be safe.

LadyPact do You sell the candles You make or just for personal use?

I have, in fact, been selling them. However, to date, I just haven't had it in Me to charge so that I would make a profit. I've been selling them at cost. I'd rather not make a dime off of the enterprise than the alternative.

I'm kind of a shitty business woman.
