A new low in informationless advertising.
I am so sick of commercials with no actual information on a product or service. Designed purely to appeal to psychological buttons.
Those poor stockbrokers and bankers laying awake at night fretting over my well being. My poor shattered ego ....will I ever find the right can of smell to make me a decent human being?

With an ad of one seconds length, you can so nicely and subliminally slip it into the psyche between two longer carefully chosen bookends. Hmmmmm one second political ads between selected stories on the news.....

Too much of the free market is manipulation of minds, economics and lives. A better product too often as an afterthought.

Although any kind of advertising can be abused, this advertising is targeted towards marketers who have products that are already ingrained in a consumer's mind, and work more as a reminder of the product.  There aren't many companies out there that they expect it to work for.  i actually went to Clear Channel's presentation on this, and it's just giving advertisers new and different ways to reach a consumer that's largely tuned out.  Businesses have to reach their consumers.  Nothing wrong with that.

Advertising is ingrained in our society and i don't personally see it as a bad thing (of course, am in that line of work but i've been exposed to advertising just like the rest of us).  It's not a matter of minimizing it or limiting it, but being educated about it to discern between the bs and what may actually be important to you.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/I disagree. Radio has lost me as a consumer. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/
Too many ads, cheapen the program. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/
TV is woefully oversaturated. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/

When I get gas, an ad- on the pump handle, the loud speaker at times playing commerici http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/al.

If one sponsor - sponsored  -jon doe documnetary-  I would remember that.  http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/
Maybe even support such. But a blizzard of ads... thank god for tivo DVRs!http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hopeisontheway/

Frankly- even when I record the show, at times it is too annoying to push the skip button 4 times...that I simply erase the program.

Western society is losing its ability to mediate- to experience silence. Tranquility.

It may surprise you, but there was a time- alot of people were going to smash their tv sets!

See?

pahunkboy -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/13/2006 3:08:57 PM)

Ked- good post. I agree.

Lol. Have you seen TV in Asia? Not much tranquility or silence there either.

The song ends..." LOVE STINKS!!!" ....one second ad for feminine hygeine product.....Next song " If ya think I'm sexy.." Playing with your mind? Insecurities? Building a better world?

News story..." Dollar drops, market crashes".....one second attack ad " Democrats ".......Next news story " Huge death toll in....". Not subliminal? Not a cheap shot? Don't think it will happen?

Advertising has become preying upon insecurities, stroking egos. It is overall a detriment to us now. The big percentage of them are all psychological warfare on us. Not a good thing.

The Century of the Self.
A four part series on creating consumerism and advertising via psychology.
Excellent and entertaining.
You may be able to get the vids for download here. Look down the left hand side list for it.
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/

The vids are grainy but still good to hear/watch. A lot of interesting tidbits, to see behind the ads you watch every day.

Nicely stated. At one time advertisements were charming, maybe even nostalgic.

It has become too much to absorb.

free speech had a good documentary on called   "No Logo", very interesting.

We are already a consumeristic society. We will still buy things if all ads stopped.

The 23rd old probaly had good intentions in her statement.... [but] she would not remember the 70s or sooner as a comparison point.

i like nice things as much as the next person....and go to stores...

I dont know what Japan does -but America is the predominent culture. We export this stuff globally. [the good the bad and the ugly]

When I did listen to radio- I literally broke 3 radios...the part that changes the station, due to changing the station.

Not that the world has any lose by one person refusing radio, but in quantity- it would have an impact.  For 10 years I had not TV in my home. 91-00. I hardly missed it.

Gah! Sirius! *holds up a crucifix* Back!!

;)

I'm an XM fan myself.

*meow*

Moloch -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 6:17:05 AM)

Well yeah I dont know XM doesnt have a friggin customer service dept where you can talk to a person and they are starting to put commercials on some of the channels, Im probably gonna go back to downloading music from the net for free instead of paying XM so I can listen to shitty commercials.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 6:30:41 AM)

Hmmmmm....  I wonder how radio stations and TV channels pay for their programs......  Oh yeah, we pay for it.  Radio isn't free, we all send $200 per month to pay for the station's costs.  Cool.  Glad we got that out of the way.  What?  We don't?  Who pays for it then? Advertisers?  No, couldn't be!  I mean, they're only out to get us for shits and giggles.

My whole point is, if you don't like ads, avoid the source.  And if you decide you really do want to use a (virtually) free service, don't bitch about the person who is paying for it wanting to get something for their money.

Yours,

benji

Moloch -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 7:11:31 AM)

Uhh dude I pay 14 bucks a month for my XM radio. They advertised it as commercial free.

pahunkboy -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 9:20:43 AM)

The citizens OWN the airwaves. Not clearchannel. They are leased out on a 3 year license.

pahunkboy -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 9:56:37 AM)

Artcat,

I applaud you for taking action to get clearchannel OUT of your home car and life. I hope xm doesnt go to commericials.

I used to comment every time a local radio station was up for renewal. It did not good. SO I voted with my feet/ with my dollars.
I used to listten often enuff to be mindful if i was on 30 days per winning a contest, from waking up to crashing.

Good job to all that has taken control of there life via this or anyother corp intrustion. I salute you!

Moloch -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 10:14:50 AM)

Umm clear channel owns a huge ching of XM stock, they FORCED XM to play commercials.

pahunkboy -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 10:52:46 AM)

That would not surprise me.  My brother is a subsriber of XM, in Chicago. You would think a metro that big could sevice its market. But they cant.

I can see him switching excusely to CDs.

Submotive -> RE: Clearchannel 1 second ads (6/15/2006 11:43:41 AM)

Okay, this will date me ~shrugs~
Years ago TV was free - there were advertisers called sponsors which made the programs possible through their financial support. Then the advent of cable TV - originally advertised as a way out from under commercials - HA

Now who's dumber - the viewers or the networks. Now we pay for cable and are bombarded with even more ads. i don't and i won't.
