Republicans have fraudulently registered Democrats to vote … as Republicans, a Riverside County Democratic group claims, according to a story by California Watch.

The GOP has reported an increase of about 35,000 new Republicans in Riverside County this year alone, the nonprofit news organization reported.

“In a complaint filed last week with the county registrar of voters, the Democrats presented affidavits from 133 Democratic voters who said they had been re-registered as Republicans without their consent after they encountered petition circulators outside welfare offices and stores,” California Watch reported Wednesday.

“One voter complained that his registration was changed to Republican after he signed what he thought was a petition to legalize marijuana. Another said he was told he was signing a petition to lower the price of gasoline, according to the affidavits.

“Among the Democrats who said they were involuntarily re-registered as Republicans: two aides to retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Roth, a Democrat locked in a tight race with Republican Assemblyman Jeff Miller for a state Senate seat.

“Many of the complainants were Latino or African American,” California Watch pointed out.

“Steve Maviglio, a spokesman for the Democratic Party’s voter registration efforts, said Republican signature collectors might have improperly re-registered thousands of Riverside County Democrats. Maviglio blamed a GOP registration committee, the Golden State Voter Participation Project.

“Ashley Giovannettone, spokeswoman for that project, said that it has a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy on registration fraud.

“‘Registering Democrats as Republican doesn’t help our cause,’ she said.”

OK, so people don't read what they sign.

These people are idiots. I also will wait for the actual judgment on this instead of taking the word of the Dems.

I've always wondered what lawyer came up with the idea of the fine print at the bottom one needs a microscope to read.

See? Voter registration fraud and voter fraud don't happen.

Outside of primaries and truly meaningless statistical cataloging, what does it matter how you're affiliated, party-wise?

I'm not exonerating those who changed the registrations illegally, but, I don't see the big deal. In Ohio, those 133 Democrat-aligned voters wouldn't be able to vote in Democrat primaries. That there are no primaries left this year means that there isn't really going to be any material impact.

I look forward to those who performed the illegal actions receiving their just consequences.

There is a difference between these two.

Which is why I stated what I stated, and then went on to question the likely impact of the registration fraud.

What do you make of fraudulent registrations that include provisional votes at the same time? Voter fraud, or just Voter Registration fraud?

Neither as they are not actually counted until confirmed.

mnottertail -> RE: More voter registration fraud (9/27/2012 8:49:28 AM)

And voter ID would not have solved this registration fraud, and in fact will not solve any fraud.

subrob1967 -> RE: More voter registration fraud (9/27/2012 8:59:06 AM)

Is there a law in California that states one must vote for the party they're registered to?

If not, why does it matter if one is a registered republican if the vote a straight democrat ticket? I'd think that crap like this would give the democrats bragging rights.

"Hey look at how many republicans crossed the party lines and voted for us! Doesn't that prove our platform is the one America wants?"

Its called Electoral Fraud. You are ok with this because it happened at registration? Wasnt that one of the huge complaints with ACORN?

Whether a provisional ballot is counted is contingent upon the verification of that voter's eligibility. Many voters do not realize that the provisional ballot is not counted until 7–10 days after election so their vote does not affect the calling of the states to different candidates.

Its spelled out in each state.

What is a provisional ballot?
A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there is some question regarding a voter's eligibility. You have the right to vote by provisional ballot if:

Your name does not appear on the district register (poll book) and election officials cannot determine your registration status, even though you are properly registered and eligible to vote in the election district.
You do not have an approved form of ID the first time you appear to vote in an election district.
An election official asserts that you are not eligible to vote.

County election officials will examine the provisional ballots within seven days after an election to determine whether you were entitled to vote in the election at the election district where you voted. After this seven-day period, you can find out if your provisional ballot was counted, partially counted or not counted by calling 1-877-(removed for possible TOS)

http://www.aclupa.org/issues/votingissues/makeyourvotecount.htm

Voters cast provisional ballots for a variety of reasons: They don’t bring proper ID to the polls; they fail to update their voter registration after moving; they try to vote at the wrong precinct; or their right to vote is challenged by someone.

These voters may have their votes counted, but only if election officials can verify that they were eligible to vote, a process that can take days or weeks. Adding to the potential for chaos: Many states won’t even know how many provisional ballots have been cast until sometime after Election Day.

Voters cast nearly 2.1 million provisional ballots in the 2008 presidential election. About 69 percent were eventually counted, according to election results compiled by the Associated Press.

Unless the verifications are questioned. At that point, all the Elections Committee needs is to have a backup plan in place. No execution of the backup plan required.

So they are verified. 44% are tossed because they were purged off the voter rolls. 2004, 35.5, 2006, 20.5. You act like they never get tossed and are always counted.

Yep. And, if the verification is questioned, and rightly so, they don't have to be re-verified.

And why would they need a verification of a verification?

If a verification is questionable, it would need verification.

tazzygirl -> RE: More voter registration fraud (9/27/2012 10:29:09 AM)

Each state has their own verification process.

The Pennsylvania voter ID law recently upheld by a state court allows people without acceptable identification to vote by a provisional ballot that would count if they verify their identity within six days. Ohio voters have 10 days to provide acceptable identification, while in Florida, election officials verify the ballots by matching signatures.
