Status: offline 		So I own a small company, have about 10 people working for me. So about 6 months ago a employee with less than a year on the job came to me and said her Mother died and she needed to take time off. OK, no problem I gave her a week with pay and she ended up taking 2 more weeks off, one with pay and one without.

Fast forward to last Saturday, I went to her wedding...and you guessed it I met her Mother.....

Now she could have told me before the wedding about her lie, she could have done a lot of things, she did nothing, and when she came into work yesterday and we talked in the office with a manger present, she tried to tell me she never told me her mother died and that I gave her the time off because she was moving.

She longer works for me, it will be interesting to see if she files for unemployment

Status: offline 		How old is she? In the workplace I see this mostly in late teens/early twenties, but just for a day or two. Three weeks is a long time...

Was she otherwise a good employee or did she demonstrate lack of reliability in other ways?

As for her work performance, I would basically say she was doing her job average, not the best not the worst

She is in her thirties

I would have given her the benefit of the doubt, had she not become so self righteous, even when we showed her the request she turned in for time off. Insisting I changed it, even though she wrote it out.

Oh well life goes on....I just sat there in disbelief with my manager as she insisted it was us, and that she never wrote it blah blah blah....

More just posting because I was so caught off guard by her behavior,

Ironic, isn't it.

OP: I've done assistant HR work on and off for the past five years and I can say this. Some people make outrageous requests or lies when it comes to time off, and that's dumb; but it can be dumber if it isn't documented.

One woman who was fired for attendance came back the same day, having pulled her kids out of school to show them off to HR and demand to get her job back.

On the flip side, I had a boss who said to me:

1) When I told her that I had been diagnosed with cancer and I was going to need some time off. She said< "How much time? Because I need you here."

2) When my grandfather died, I asked to get out of work an hour early on a Friday, so I could be at the wake when it started. She said: I don't understand why you need to leave early. He'll still be dead if you get there an hour late."

I always used the one: I cant come in today, because I went out last night drinking and drugging. I have some weird guy I drug home in my bed and I cant get him to wake up. I'll see you tomorrow.

That reminds me of a woman I worked for years ago. She was cold........ice cold.

Yanno, I had heard about rohypnol during that craze and said hey drop it in a drink and you can have your way with the woman.........cool, gave it a shot, but I passed out from it (it was pretty heavy) and don't think I got any.........
