If you applied for a government job or was offered one and someone who would become your boss afterwards said before you finished signing up "Now listen you do understand that by taking this job you'll be required to do things that fall under a... morally grey area are you okay with that?" Would you still take the well paying job?

There's nowhere near enough information there to make a decision. 'Morally grey' could be very different from one person to the next. It's hard for me to imagine what you might be getting at here.

But yes, assuming you do mean 'grey' and this isn't a euphamism for 'you'll be doing unambiguously awful things to people', I would. I have already been in a government job which involved an awful lot of moral grey areas and caused me to do a lot of soul searching and re-evaluating of my own opinions. But overall, I believe I did some serious good in that job.

Sadly it wasn't very well paid.

Unfortunately, I still believe in some of the religious principles that I learned, while growing up and I believe that a good number of people aren't strong enough to place themselves into "near occasions of sin" without eventually falling prey to it.

Now, please remember I said religious principles . I am not making a value judgement on what people choose to do to earn their living but, for me, if I had a profession where I was constantly in a dilemna as to whether a little "white lie" or whatever would help to grease the skids, I would have to leave that profession.

As it is, in my profession, I have found myself having to admonish clients when they "hint at" cutting a corner or turning a blind eye to something. In some cases, I have refused to do business with them.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

This is why we need more information. I've never lied or enabled a client to break the law, but I've been called upon to make decisions on a daily basis that are morally difficult on one level or another.

For example:
I've called in social services to help a child when I had no doubt their appearance would likely result in a severe beating for the mother for asking for help
I've sent police into the homes of clients who deeply distrusted them and would absolutely consider this a betrayal, because I feared for their lives
I've argued in favour of children being removed from the parent even when I know the parent is doing the best he/she can and the situation isn't their fault
I've been honest about my client's criminal records/drug and alcohol problems even when I knew it would almost certainly prevent them getting a place in a refuge
I've encouraged women and children to report sexual assaults even though I've witnessed first hand how distressing and often ineffective the criminal process is in those cases

Now in all of the situations I've done what I felt would be the lesser evil, but I've often gone home feeling I did something morally wrong. To me, that's a different moral grey area than say, advising someone how to dodge their taxes or lying to get a big contract. They were unavoidable decisions that someone would have had to make if not me.

I'm talking about doing bad things for the greater good kind of grey.

More information needed.

I was at an ethics class where one person put taking a box of paper clips and embezzling 100K in the same category since they were both "theft" regardless of degree.

madramblings -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 12:46:44 PM)

Absolutely not, under any circumstances; even if my life depended on it. Now, if it wasn't the government, I might ask what constitutes morally grey, because, after all, for a lot of the world, being involved in BDSM in any fashion is morally grey. I know enough to know what "morally grey" means to the government, though, and it is not even remotely grey. It is pitch dark black, as are most things that are "morally grey", in fact.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 12:48:34 PM)

Well, if I let imagination fill in all the blanks and presume you are referring to normal social morals, the answer is yes. My personal moral code, what little there is of it, probably wouldn't clash with anything a government job would require.

So what does it pay?

They are both theft and thievery is either right or wrong to do. However, embezzlement is more than just thievery. It is also lying, usually stealing from more than one person, potentially putting others in danger if they are suspected instead of you and maybe a lot else besides.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 12:52:28 PM)

What constitutes "the greater good". My many friends who are retired military did a lot of bad things on the job, and I am not sure any of them would say that they did something for anyone's good.

Still doesn't clear things up much. I hate to use a really cliched example, but I'm sure Hitler believed his actions were for the greater good during the holocaust. On the other end of the spectrum, there's stealing a loaf of bread to feed a starving family kind of 'bad things for the greater good'.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 12:59:24 PM)

I would not take a job if I did not know what the job entailed. If the job entailed doing things that were against my personal code, things that I knew would haunt me forever but serve no purpose? Then I wouldn't do it. No amount of money is worth that.

stellauk -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 1:01:18 PM)

No.

I follow my own individual code of ethics and morals for a reason and that voice of my inner soul will always speak louder than the voice of anyone else around me.

This is not to say that I haven't gone against myself or even betrayed myself in the past. I have. And I have learned.

But if I were prepared to go against my own moral principles why would I need a job to do so? Surely committing a crime would be much easier.

I'm at that stage of life where every day, irrespective of how that day is going to turn out, I can wake up in the morning and face myself in the mirror.

That feeling is not for sale, not at any price.

LaTigresse -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 1:02:50 PM)

What Hibby said.

As for the poll, I went with 'What the hell am I reading?' because the questions, as posed, were too ambiguous.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 1:07:07 PM)

If the potential employer wouldn't specify what he meant, I'd turn the job down; if the acts are too bad to talk about openly, they're beyond what I'm willing to deal with.

ARIES83 -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 1:21:48 PM)

What might be a grey area for some may be
different to others.

And having said that you do something enough,
you desensitise to it...
I guess the question you need to ask yourself is,
Is it worth the cost to yourself?
You desensitise yourself to enough things and
pretty soon your not feeling anything.

I presumed by the "government job" reference, it meant you were going to lie, cheat, steal, kill, oppress and break promises.

Like I said, what does pay? It all depends on the pay level. You want me to kill for army wages? Forget that.

Oh no kidding. And the thing is, those jobs where you have to do bad things often entail people on the other side wanting to do bad things to YOU. Or your family. No way ever would I put my family at risk.

LaTigresse -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 1:49:37 PM)

Many many moons ago, in my previous life.......I was told by a nefarious character that my ex got us involved with.......that I would make a great hit person. And he was serious. Truth be told, I probably could have gone that route except that even in my impressionable youth (I was about 20 at the time) I just couldn't put my family in that position. If I'd been an orphan and had no children......who knows.

Nepharious character is long since dead, a mob legend, and only kinda remembered in the occasional movie or documentary. I, on the otherhand, have a great life that I expect to last a few more decades.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Would you take a job that put you in a lot of morally grey situations? (9/28/2012 2:55:08 PM)

Nope, i have too much imagination and a conscience that annoys the heck out of me. [:o]
